Not too long ago we put out a video called six decluttering secrets and you guys were so inspired
to go around and get rid of stuff from your homes that I thought, you know what, it's time for
another one of those. So in this video I'm giving you six more decluttering secrets and my hope is
that you go around your house again and you get rid of even more stuff because you can do this.
Just a quick reminder if you haven't done so already to subscribe to the Gleam My Space
channel and give this video a thumbs up if you have things you need to declutter from your home.
You're at the store, you buy something nice and it comes in this gigantic box or maybe it's a
small box or it has a lot of packaging. Whatever it is, I am positive you don't need that packaging
at home. So where it is possible, leave as much packaging at the store as you can. It's one less
thing for you to deal with. Great way to save space is shoes. So when I buy shoes I tend to
just leave the box in the store, throw the shoes in the bag, move on with my life and it's a great
way to not bring a big old shoe box home. Now let's say it's something bigger like a TV or an
online purchase and you have the box and the foam and the plastic things and whatever. What you can
do as soon as you get that stuff is dispose of it immediately. So we have a box cutter in the
kitchen, we just tear up our boxes as soon as they come in, we fold them, stick them in the recycling
box and we don't have to think about them again. And getting rid of all that packaging really helps
slim down the amount of stuff floating around our house. Let's say you've gone through your
closet and you've gotten rid of everything that you don't wear anymore but you're still
faced with a lot of stuff. Well there is a way to slim down your closet and that is simply folding
or rolling. Now I know this might sound obvious to you but just think about it for a minute.
Your closet really is designed for those things that shouldn't be folded because you don't want
wrinkles or that need the length when they're actually hanging. So if you find that you have
limited closet space and you only have stuff in your cupboards that you love, what you can do is
fold or roll the clothing. Now if it's something that's prone to wrinkling, rolling is actually
an amazing technique to save a lot of space and reduce wrinkles. And we made a video about that
a while back and I'll link that for you down below. It's also got great folding tips so you're all
good. There's this period in your life where you move out of your parents home and then you're on
your own for a bit and if you're there, cool, but if you're past that point you probably still have
some linens kicking around from your earlier days and you just have them there in case of emergency.
Well what kind of emergencies are coming around that you really need extra linens? But think about
it like this, linens take up a lot of space in your linen closet. No matter how you slice them
and dice them or fold them or vacuum seal them, they still take up room. And the truth is you
probably don't need them because when you strip your beds, you either have one additional set of
linens that you throw on your bed while the other ones are being washed, or you just wash your
linens and then put them right back on your bed when they're done. So when you're sick and tired
of looking at those linens, you can move on from them, you can donate them and get yourself a nice
new set, but you don't want to start hoarding linens because if you do, you're gonna fill up
your linen closet with way more linens than you're ever going to need. Whether you work at home or at
an office, decluttering your workspace at the end of the day will make a really big difference for
you the next morning because I find that messes and clutter are magnetic. So the more stuff there
is, the more stuff it attracts. The cleaner your desk is, whether again it's at home or at an
office, the more likely you are to take better care of it the next day and frankly be more productive.
So what I've done and what I think works really well is to give yourself about five minutes before
you wrap up work for the end of the day and just tidy up papers, organize everything. If it needs a
little wipe down, if you spilled some coffee or a little bit of an apple got somewhere, just give
it a quick wipe up. Make your desk area feel clean and feel presentable and that's really going to
help you slim down on any potential clutter build-up. This is my honest collection of manuals
for things like kettles, outdoor heaters, vacuum cleaners, air fryers, juicers, all the things that
I don't really need manuals for. You know why? Because oh what was it back in I don't know the
late 80s or early 90s, the internet came around and now you can get all of these manuals online.
So here's my recommendation and this is actually what we are doing because I do not need to take
up space with the garden treasure tabletop gas patio heater. I don't need that manual,
when am I going to reference that manual? So what we're doing is this, we're going online,
we're downloading the pdfs, we're creating a little digital folder and we're throwing all
the manuals that we might need in there. That way if you ever do need to reference something,
you can simply open the pdf and use it but you don't have to worry about flipping through a
whole bunch of paper. Honestly that's really 80s, nobody does that anymore. Parents of adult
children, this one is for you. So a long time ago when I moved out of my home and then my mom
ended up selling that house and needing to slim her stuff down, she hit me with the first round
of I gotta get rid of some of your stuff from when you were a kid. Which basically ripped my
heart out of my chest because you always think all of your little goodies from when you're little,
your artwork, your stuffed animals, your blankets, all that crap is going to be kept in your
parent's house forever and that's not realistic. So parents, if you have that stuff built up in
your house and it is overwhelming you, it's time to get real with your kids. Give them a call,
send them an email and tell them by this date if you haven't picked and taken what you wanted,
I'm donating it or it's going somewhere else and you're not going to know where that is.
My mom did it to me, it felt terrible at the time but then I kind of got over myself and
it was actually great because I managed to slim down to only the stuff that I really wanted and
everything else we kind of got rid of. And my mom did keep a couple of things with her,
Chad's actually going through it right now with his mom and his brothers are participating in
that as well. This is something that pretty much every family goes through and it's not
fair for the parents, they don't have to bear the burden of their kid's stuff anymore.
Your parents still love you, you still love your children, but the stuff's gotta go.
This week's comment question is, what is the hardest thing for you to declutter in your home?
Is it your aunt's doll collection, your mom's stamp collection, that spoon collection that
you acquired somehow, baby clothes, kid's artwork? There are so many things that we
love to hang on to that we just have such a hard time getting rid of. So I'd love to know what
yours are in the comments down below. For me, it seems to be, honestly, greening cards and clothing.
I think those are the two hardest things for me. So I'd love to know what yours are.
