If you’re running out of garden space, then why not consider growing upwards?
Here are five plants I found which will hopefully give more height to my garden, creating more interest at a higher level.
I found a Salix ‘Hakuro-Nishiki’ (commonly known as the Flamingo Tree) for its beautiful pink coloured leaves, three climbing Roses ‘Santana’, ‘Paul’s Climbing’ and the wonderfully named ‘Schneewittchen’ and finally, my biggest gamble, a Gunnera ‘Manicata’.
Richard very kindly installed all the training wires for the climbing Roses so off we go!

Janette, The Enthusiastic Gardener
Hi everyone it's Jeanette again from Enthusiastic Gardener and I'm out today
and I know I said recently last weekend that last weekend was the best weekend of all ever
because it was spring but no I've changed my mind because this weekend is even better because this
weekend the clocks change and it is officially British summer time so that is the best time
of the whole gardening calendar instead of last weekend I'm very fickle another reason I'm fickle
I am fickle because recently I said to everyone that I was going to change my upload schedule
and I was going to upload once a week but since then I have been gardening just as much anyway
so if I can do two videos a week I will if not I won't that's it really so it is officially
British summer time this weekend and that is the time in my garden when we change this
into this today I wanted to talk about five different plants that I am planting
to create some height in the garden because I think I'm lacking height so that is my job
for the day and I have five beautiful plants to create height in my garden
so this is the first thing I've planted for some height because this border down here you can't see
it when the chairs are out it's kind of hidden so I thought this would look nice a little bit
height that you can see over the top of the chairs and it's called a salix a hakoro nishiki
and it's going to be a beautiful topiary it's not flowers but the leaves will turn pink and white
and I think that will look very very pretty that's probably the height that it will stay at
all being well maybe about this high I think that will look lovely so that's my first plant
for a bit of height I've never had one of these before but I have actually always really liked
them right so we've got that one in now plants two three and four are climbing roses I've never had
climbing roses but I've just been watching quite a few videos with everyone else how to train their
climbing rose which gave me the idea so I'm going to put one along here so I've got three different
types I have two red and I have a white one this one they're all beautiful I don't know the
this one is called santana and roses like full sun so this is the perfect position for full sun
so we've got santana and I've got another red one hot scarlet climber they look very very healthy
this one has four five stems that we can train and this one is a beautiful white one
and this one is called a climbing snivichem that's white but yes they all like full sun
and this one is going to go over on my fence that side so here they are they're planted this is one
rose here put some tulips in the bottom and the second one is planted here and then the third one
is going to be it's in that little container there and unfortunately we have to take all our
little ornaments off I'm going to tackle this one first and I have two of these kits by a
company called Practical and they are plant training kits train your plants across a wall
or fence securely and you just drill a pilot hole for the vine eye screw fix the vine eye screw by
screwing it in about three quarters of the length of the thread attach the screen wire by threading
it through the vine eye and twisting onto the wire itself repeat for both ends of the wire
tension the wire by turning the vine eye screw and this has each pack has 30 meters in its galvanized
screen wire so it shouldn't go rusty and it has 10 vine eye screws so let's hand over to Richard
and then where's the next line well I would say about that far apart not even a foot
might be 10 inches perhaps what's 10 inches
oh no maybe a foot yeah just keep going up a proper foot each time
I think maybe I need another row than that so I'm optimistic
ladies and gentlemen I am right now do the lateral so I'm going to push this one
down here this one can go this way and then when that grows I could kind of do it back that way
and you can kind of do this as well so yes the important thing to know is
if you don't want a vertical you want horizontal at least 90 degrees is the best about 45 degrees
will do because the lateral shoots or these buds we tie that there here is the one which is along
my wall of my house and at the moment I've just tied it two side ones they will hopefully go off
in that direction these middle ones I've just tied because they were tending to come
grow a little bit forward so I thought I'll tie them there but hopefully they will grow up
and once they reach this next section then we can splay those
along now for the fifth and final plant that I'm going to use in my garden to add some height I am
being very ambitious and may live to regret this we shall see we won't know if we don't try it is
and it is going to be huge they're beautiful but no I don't have the room for this
but it was eight pounds and I've loved them and I bought it for the shaded corner
right over by my garden illusion gate and then after buying it then I researched
instead of the other way around I know and it likes full sun so it's not going to be very happy
over there but it grows 10 feet tall and I know I don't have proof what I thought I would do it
cost me eight pounds eight pounds to give it a try I'm going to put it over in that very corner there
it likes a lot of water which is right next to my limelight hydrangea which likes a lot of water too
it's going to be full sun and what I thought I would do is get some plant supports
so that it can't go outwards it can only go upwards and then maybe it will grow upwards
and be a wonderful beautiful big canopy we shall see anyway it's fun to try and I do love them
I did consider putting it in a pot maybe that would stunt its growth a little bit so that
that is an option as well I have a little bit of time to consider what to do because at the
moment it's in my greenhouse because it doesn't like the frost and we haven't reached our last
frost day yet so that will be going in the garden at some point and that is my number five
of plants to create height in my garden which I'm very excited about
anyway that's going back in the greenhouse until the last frost day has has been reached so that's
it from me it's very cold and windy today so I'm going in now it's Sunday today I'm going in
and have a cup of coffee watch a bit of television and cuddle up with my dog so thank you so much for
watching take care everyone and have a great week it's going to be lighter evenings now so
we might be able to get bits and pieces done when we get home from work so that is very exciting
so take care everyone thank you for watching bye
