It was on the morning of February 15th, 2013, in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. The city was as bustling as ever. The asteroid was travelling at a speed of Mach 54, or 54 times the speed of sound. At about 9:20 am, the asteroid exploded violently 28 km above the ground. As curious people watched from their windows and enjoyed this spectacle, the unfortunate happened. Because the event took place at such a high altitude, people didn’t hear the loud bang until 90 seconds later. The shock wave shattered countless windows and over 1,000 people were injured because of it. The asteroid fragments also damaged over 3,000 buildings.

What would happen if the explosion did not take place? What damage would the asteroid cause? Scientists estimated that the power would be equivalent to 30 Hiroshima atomic bombs. More horrifyingly, the asteroid's expected landing site is 100 kilometers away from the Mayak nuclear facility. If the asteroid struck the facility, the consequences would be unimaginable. It would have destroyed Asia, or even the world, in the blink of an eye.

You may be wondering, we have such advanced technology, couldn’t we spot a killer asteroid before it hits Earth? I believe this is a matter of concern for all of us. The dinosaurs once dominated the Earth for about 180 million years. But they went extinct after a devastating asteroid impact. If we were in constant danger of smashing into asteroids, but we cannot even predict the upcoming danger, then wouldn’t humanity face the same abrupt ending as dinosaurs?
