Basically everything we do now is something our dad taught us or took us to do for the first time.
Whether it be surfing, fishing, spearfishing, hunting. I think there's just definitely
attraction to being off the beaten path and he taught us that. It's kind of amazing how much
one person can influence you. For me Keith and Dana it was always just about keeping up with
their old man. One weekend he might be entered in the rodeo, week after that going pig hunting,
going down to Baja or riding buck and horses. It was always about being outside and it was
always about sort of finding your way to get yourself into a little bit of trouble. In our
family that was looked at as a good thing. When our garage had a sign on the wall that said
check out time, 18 years old. They grew up tight as teeth. They grew up in a very very traditional
household. I wanted to find their passion. I wanted to find something that they loved to do.
Looking back on it now I'm surprised at how much he supported us you know in surfing
being that there wasn't like a real good chance of making a career out of it.
Holy moly. Through surfing we got the opportunity to go all over the world.
I've never counted the countries they've been to but if you look at that map it's unbelievable.
So Dan and I both have surfed the Aleutians. Surfed in Chile. You've surfed in Nova Scotia
haven't you? Yep. Ireland. Oh New Caledonia right here. Norway. Morocco. Dan surfed in Jamaica.
All through Baja. Andaman Island in the Bay of Bengal. Keith surfed Russia. Papua New Guinea.
Taiwan. Oh you've surfed Sri Lanka. Easter Island. Iceland. Liberia. Namibia. Antarctica
and the Shetland Islands. Texas. Corpus Christi, Texas. If you were willing to like go look or
go off of a rumor or you know have a hunch on something you could go and get waves almost by
yourself. I feel like I met Chris along the way just surfing in the surfing life. The main thing
all of it has always been about being out there engaged in this particular way of surfing which
has as much to do with paddling your outrigger boat, spearing a sea bass, body surfing, sitting
around the campfire talking about it all. Going to places to find those waves where you still have
it to yourself that's one of the most special things in surfing. There's so much coastline
that's undiscovered. They are you know at the top of what you can achieve in professional surfing.
They've achieved it. Between the three of them they've competed on the WCT, the Eddie, the Pipe
Masters, Dan Got Performer of the Year, Best Film of the Year. How many surfers have accomplished what they've accomplished.
There's a Hindu proverb that kind of for me sums everything up in terms of spiritual and creative
on a day-to-day basis. Sort of like the answer to life really and it goes like this. Goes up.
We were on the road for 10 months out of the year for two decades. Now that we have families and
we're home for most of the year you know you pick up those things you loved as a kid you know fishing
and hunting and being in the backcountry. That's how we started our lives and that's something
that we'll do for the rest of our lives.
we shall remain
