How to export scene from 3ds Max to Unreal Engine 5 - Continue in UE - Exterior in Unreal Engine 5
Nov 9, 2022
Let's continue to work. We go to the content, Datasmith. Let me remind you that in order to
enable the plugin you need to enter Datasmith in the settings and check the Datasmith importer
checkbox. We already have the plugin available. Go to the content, go to the folder where we save
the geometry and I will select only the geometry. Plants we will transfer later because the plants
have the most weight. First of all we need to transfer the basic geometry and light settings
and when this is ready we will transfer the plants. We select with control all the geometry.
We need to remove all checkboxes in generate light mask because we will have dynamic light.
We leave only the first two checkboxes. Click import. Let's try to transfer the camera.
In general we will go to 3d max, select camera that we want to transfer and sign it.
Choose a folder, select the type of file, check that it was in small window selection.
All transferred. Go back, double click, double click on the object, select the position and import.
Camera transferred. But if we go to perspective we will not find the camera there. Next I will show
you how to transfer the camera at once with animation. I will show you how to create your
own cameras within Unreal. All of the specified objects are displayed normally when imported.
Let's see in the content drawer. Then we can export some plants to show the effect of optimization.
Geometry, materials and textures. Only we import, press ok. Nothing seems to be transported but the
object starts to appear. You can see their shadows. This is because Unreal is optimized
to a certain limit. In this case the plants will show up but when the number of plants is too high
the geometry will disappear. We'll get rid of that. I will fly closer now and you can see the shadows.
They are displayed first. When you get further away the foliage disappears first, then the trunks.
If you get too far away you can't see the whole tree array. Now let's create a camera and set it
up. Click on create camera here and choose cine camera actor. We have created a camera.
When it is highlighted you can edit it in the bottom right corner. I will increase the current
focal length. Let's go back to the perspective and select the desired camera. Press the right mouse
button and move the composition. Now we can select a desired composition and lock the camera
so as not to move it. Right click the camera, click transform, then lock actor movement.
Save the work. To do this click on save in the upper left corner or click ctrl s.
