A thematic analysis of Pulp Fiction. If you have a question please ask below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you disagree with my interpretation please be polite and state your case with examples. This is a learning experience for everyone and I am happy to be proven incorrect if that be the case. Thank you!
Respect is an odd concept to really pin down and define. It's something that can come from
intimidation and prestige, from ancestry and action, from mystery and understanding,
from reality or fiction. In other words, it can come from totally opposite places.
How can you really understand something so broad without being witness to so many different
examples and viewpoints? It's one thing to delve into a side of something, but when there are
infinite surfaces to survey, it might be best to just catch a glimpse and think broadly.
Respect for a boss's wishes, for example, is something everyone can relate to. Maybe not a
boss that commands fear of physical harm, but still one that makes you worry over every little detail
of a job. So not pressing certain types of situations that may be perverted is something
to think about when thrown into tight spots. I'm gonna sit across from her, chew my food,
my mouth closed, laugh at her ******* jokes, and that's it. Because not respecting those
boundaries is a surefire way to put yourself in a negative situation. Of course, even little
things can end up being disrespectful to one degree or another, and consequence will occur.
However, there are usually opportunities to amend these times,
and when you're dealing with relatively nice people, it's easy to move past it or withhold
unnecessary or harmful information. A what-do-you-don't-know-won't-hurt-him
mentality isn't too disrespectful. At least not as disrespectful as backing out of a deal.
You'd think someone who grew up having respect for ancestry would,
but then again, when the feeling isn't mutual, it's easy to take advantage of those who
underestimate. Also, lacking a basic respect for human life
or tradition makes it pretty easy.
In the end, though, there are certain things you wouldn't wish on anyone,
and given the chance, it'll probably help out. Mutual respect doesn't always come from work
or a positive place, but from a simple understanding after a shared experience.
Redemption or grace is a decent point of respect. Maybe not one that you should push,
but one nonetheless. Same as a basic respect for elders, the past, others' living standards,
the people you claim to be important, or it's others' fate.
Whatever their belief may be.
But what is the ultimate point of respect, or at least something that binds all these
other examples together? Maybe just the general, unspecified respect for another person's life,
especially coming from someone who once stood up. Maybe it's simply trying to be a better person
You're the weak, and I'm the tyranny of evil men. One step at a time.
But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.
What some would call self-respect. Or maybe there are no ultimates in life,
just a collage of concepts such as respect mixed into a whole lot of pulp, i.e. a soft,
shapeless mass of material, which could include pop culture, reappropriated iconography,
addiction, childbearing, ideas on God, humor, action, tragedy. Yeah. Thank you.
