31. Dirt Cheap Fifty-Two Foot DREAM Yacht! Should We Buy - Sailing Vessel Somnium
After taking the old diesel to Don's Marine Salvage, I took a quick look around the yard
and spotted an old Irwin 52 sitting on the hard. I was limited on time, but the boat piqued my
interest, so Randy and I went out the next weekend to spend a Saturday afternoon walking
around the salvage yard and checking out that old boat. Is that it right there? Yep.
What do you think, Randy? Yeah. I could live on this. This is so big. Yeah,
that's spongy right there. Yeah, look from this angle. Corrosion in here. Yeah,
that's spongy right there. I mean, it makes sense. Like, look at all that. There's kind of like mold
and stuff. Huge. They took up all the flooring. So amazing, Jordan. I'm not even kidding.
What do you think, Randy?
Now, I can definitely see like the potential of it, and I don't even care that right now
it's a complete disaster zone. That's actually nice, though. Did he redo that?
Yeah, those sides are nice. It's like that in the v-berth, too. Those sides are nice.
So is that literally just for the bilge? Because that's a huge compartment. No,
that's where the engine goes. See that? There's engine mounts right there. Okay.
There's no engine. That's good access to the engine then, too. This is the kitchen you always
wanted in a boat? Yeah, this is the kitchen I always wanted in a boat. I kind of wanted it to
be enough so that even if you're underway, like you have places to grab no matter which way you
need to lean or anything like that. So this is exciting to me. Plus, this looks like it's for
the refrigerator. Yeah, it's for a fridge. So you get a pretty good size fridge. If we're living
in it, that's important to me. Nice gimballed stove area. That's a big cooler. And look at
that. That's where the gimballed stove goes right there. For your wine. What do you think goes in
here? If that's the engine compartment, what's this? Most likely generator, something like that.
Batteries, I'm not a hundred percent sure. Oh, I can see right through the boat there.
Look at that, guys. The hole thickness on there is about three quarters. Yeah,
actually that's a good point. Three quarter inch hole thickness below the water line.
So wait, did you say air conditioning or anything?
I don't know, just different equipment. Probably generator,
AC. I don't know exactly what Erwin had in there because this boat's basically got it.
Could be another fridge or sink. Oh, sink. Yeah, big sink. Awesome.
Like a good size counter space here. So there's lots of handholds around, but the one area that
Jordan did worry about is like here. This is super open just because of the beam of the boat.
So you would want something. Can you reach the ceiling? There they are. Those are the ones that
originally go on the ceiling. Yeah. So you reach up and they run along this way. Yeah,
so normally there's two handrails that go down that way. Wow, look at those hands. Yeah,
you're able to see out very easily, very well. That's nice. I just want to see how this works
Don't break it.
And then this holds it, but that doesn't make sense. I don't know why that's there.
Because this goes in and not out. It's just to close it off completely so you have your own
privacy probably. The bunk goes here and then a bunk down there. Closet? Nope, just kidding. That
looks like that's a water maker. They had a water maker, yeah, because it was their RO system.
So and then that's where the mask goes behind you.
What? Oh, oh, okay. Yeah, so this is, oh, it's covered though. That's good. I was gonna say
this could be a problem. Yeah, if it was wet and watery this whole time. So like this is totally
gutted. Yeah. But oh my gosh, yeah, good size shower area. You can actually stand in here.
Yeah, and this is the guest shower. Yeah,
aww. Kind of sad that two of the tiles are ruined because that would have been fun.
Yeah. All right, so you have bunks, you have bathroom, full bathroom,
and then you have the v-berth. Ow, I just hit my head. You have little friends that are with us
right now. This isn't just a nav station, this is a navigation room. Sunglasses for you.
I mean this is like my dream navigation room. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, the siding everywhere is
looking good. I saw it in here, that's what made me realize. Yeah, everything was just cut out,
look at this. All those wires are just cut. I mean it completely ruined. So yes, this is the
mizzen compression post. Okay. So the mizzen is is deck stepped and the main is keel stepped.
I like this step-up. Queen-size bed. That's amazing, that's amazing, this is beautiful.
This would be a pretty good bedroom. Yeah.
Look at that, full tub. All your toiletries back here and that spider.
That's rot right there. That is rot, you're correct. So these bulkheads were rotting.
That is. These bulkheads are rotted out a little bit. I'm going to take you guys down into the
bilge. So what you guys are looking at right now is the bottom of the bilge. The encapsulated keel
is on the inside. I don't know if it's iron or if it's lead, but if it's lead it's probably okay.
But here's the issue, it looks like when I step down into the bilge, you see that water how it
kind of pulses out of that hole right there? It seems like it pulses when I step, like it pushes
out a little bit and goes back in. But I'm pretty sure there's water getting down into where the
actual lead or iron of the keel is. And then you have this area right here that doesn't look good
either. So definitely if we buy this boat we're going to get a good, good survey. So I think
Randy's sold. I want it. Yeah, so the thing is it's, the guy was asking 25 grand. 25 grand for
this boat. And keeping in mind, keeping in mind everything, that everything has to be replaced.
Yeah, there's not one appliance on this boat. There's not one. There's not a motor. Not a
motor. There's not a mast. We've heard that there is a mast, but we don't see it.
So essentially there's not a mast. Yeah, so the thing is we might in the future decide to do,
to get a surveyor out here and to just tell us like what this boat's really worth. And then maybe,
you know, we'll ball up the guy. A lot, because essentially it's a skeleton of a boat
with water damage. With water damage. But it's got an amazing layout.
Just a really cool boat. Good bones. Great skeleton I guess.
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, we'll be out here probably again to look at it
at some point. So leave a comment down below if there's something you guys didn't see that you
want to see. But I noticed just like in our boat it has the same sort of flooding type water damage
Yeah, I mean the companion wing and all the hatches have been open for god knows how long. So
they literally have a pump in the sump right now to pump out all the rainwater that
continuously floods into this boat. So yeah, I mean there's definite water damage. There's definite
need to replace certain bulkheads. Yep, take a look at this. Yeah, so as you can see it's
been leaking for a while. It's just exciting because you can look around this boat and see
the potential. I mean it has a ton of potential. It's just also the time and money that that would
take. Yeah, and we're trying to keep in mind that, you know, we're seeing a potential future
home for us in a lifetime boat that, you know, our children and grandchildren are going to enjoy as
well. Some pretty sweet bunk beds. Yeah, there's some there's some great bunk beds for some little
big heads, but yeah, I mean it looks it's a pretty cool boat. It's definitely something to
keep in mind in the future even if we don't end up buying this one. It's definitely, you know,
to keep this model. Yeah, all right, let's go. 80. R-down or like the steel casing for the output
So it's on a trailer, so they just got to trailer it out.
Hey guys, Randy and I just drove two hours out to Titusville to Titusville Municipal Marina.
Drove across the state for a reason you don't know about yet, but you will find out shortly.
As always, thanks for watching. If you enjoyed the video, please give it a thumbs up. Feel
