Everything GREAT About Toy Story 4!
Well, that's one way to incorporate logos, a slick transition to just complete and total
photorealistic rain. Look at all this teamwork, Bo helping Woody up, and then an insanely
coordinated stunt just so that Jesse could unlock the window. And Woody using some ingenuity right
out of the gate. Also, the way these raindrops are hitting them really sells how terrifying
the world is to tiny toys. And then the rest of the toys being resourceful. It's like they
have a checklist for my wins here. Look at that, tying into the
continuity from Toy Story 3. Fun fact, that's the command that deleted all of Toy Story 2 that one
time. Gotta be honest here, I respect Woody's loyalty to Andy because I'd be right on out of
there with Bo Peep. I'm not generally attracted to ceramic lamp figurines, but I'm a sucker for
flirts. As a person with grass to mow, I appreciate the longer grass around the swing support poles,
because you don't always want to take the weed whacker out every time you mow.
So this montage seems to have a shot that represents each movie or at least each stage
of Andy's life, first with his backwards N on Woody's boot before it gets painted over
in Toy Story 2, and then Jesse in the next shot after she ran away from Al,
and then when Andy finally gives his toys to Bonnie. Randy's still killing it two decades later.
Does LeBron stick to players? Is that the joke? Is it because Woody is trying to dribble the
dust bunny? I don't know basketball sportsmen. Bonnie's toys all have the best names.
Melephant Brooks, played by Mel Brooks. Cheryl Burnett. Bitey White. Carl Reinerosiris.
Classic names for classic cast members.
Hats off to you pre-k, kindergarten, and even elementary school teachers. I mean,
all teachers. But as the dad of a shy kid, he would never have made it through pre-k without
Mrs. McCann walking up to our car at drop-off every morning with the most enthusiastic,
hey Jude, and walking him in. You are all angels.
So this kid not only wasted the apple and stole the supplies from Bonnie, he stole the apple!
Reptilus Maximus got his own lunchbox?
And I'd just like to point out that Woody is responsible for Forky's creation, or at least his
parts. Tony Hale was born to play a spork dealing with the anxiety of existence,
his natural naivety mixed with warmth and sincerity.
Another new way of cursing from the Toy Story universe. FAO my shorts and now shoots and
ladders. Another time with these movies where watching it the first time as an adult you
wonder if this plot thread will send your kids into an existential dread spiral the way it does
for you. But nah, Trash Spork Goofy seems to be the main takeaway. More importantly, a Forky
trying to throw himself out montage is the fastest way to learn that sporks aren't the best cuddle
buddies. Also good old Randy Newman coming in with another banger, this time a classic road
trip song. That little voice inside me would never leave me alone if I gave up. Who do you think it
is? Who? The voice inside of you. Who do you think it is? I like the buzz is really taking on some of
Tim Allen's real-world personality traits, just completely aloof to reality. But Buzz is still
doing his best to help Woody, so good on you. Solid dolly zoom. They really nailed one of the
hardest things to ever make believable in CGI and animation. Weight. Forky's weight feels 100%
perfect. Memories that will last for the rest of her life. Huh? What? Put Buster Bluth in everything.
Now it's to make sure you do yours. Carry me? No! Seriously? Love that Forky finally won Woody
over during their conversation. Get Woody talking about Andy and he'll do anything for you. I know
what your problem is. You do? You're just like me. Trash! Also Woody had a brief moment as Trash,
so it's not surprising he would be trying to keep Forky away from it. A friend is like you and me.
Trash? Well, yeah, some are. Bow. Bow bow bow bow bow. Forky is just the best. Forky is always a
win. Is that a thing? That be a thing? That's a thing. I'm Gabby Jack. Wow, you need to fix that.
Honesty from Forky. Wow, after Toy Story 3, I guess we're just staying in the horror genre now.
That may literally haunt my nightmares. Oh no! Why is everyone jumping out the window?
Astute inquisition? Is that ride the Whoopi Goldberg octopus from Sunnyside? If I lived
in the Toy Story universe, I'd definitely be convinced life was a simulation. But not here
in the real world, obviously. Very real. Very, very real. Bill Hader Carney has a Pizza Planet
Now that's what I'd call a meet cute. Wait, is it called that if you already know them? Probably
not, but the way that they're pushed together slightly and because they're toys, they can't
talk to each other. It's just perfect. Hey, nice fine girls. You would not believe the things I've
seen. Uh, no. No? You're going to turn down the most valuable mirror badge of all time?
Just noticing that Woody's arm repair with the red stitching from Toy Story 2 is there.
Continuity. Combat Carl's got a piñata party to crash. Oh, poor Combat Carl Weathers. He'd do
anything for a paycheck. Step on it. I love the way Bo uses her staff for everything. She's like
a more competent Gandalf. I said what I said. A creepy little pipe cleaner hand. In a galaxy
far, far away, you got kicked in the head. Oh man, Buzz's head got totally displaced.
That's brutal. Who needs a kid's room when you can have all of this? Agreed. Buzz! My
move buddy. Ha, she remembered. I found my moving buddy. The panic is attacking me.
And that's how I'm describing that from now on. Details again. The dust particles floating in
the light. The fluff that gets kicked up into the air when the stuffed animal falls over.
There's so much fluff. The fact that there's a Nemo scuba mask next to a Bug's Life circus
cookie box makes me feel like there probably isn't a frame of this store that doesn't contain
some references to other Pixar movies. Oh, look at that. The same frame has Carl's walker from
Up. And then a very vintage looking A113 next to one of those light things that everyone's
grandma had. Blotso's sight truck. Pepita from Coco. A Monsters Inc. laugh canister.
I'd recognize Arlo's knobby knees anywhere, plus what I can assume is the brave bear above him.
That looks like Mushu. And that looks like Jerry, the chess playing toy repairing bro.
Also, there's just straight up WALL-E merch. And even outside the antique store,
there's some Coco guitars and Barley's van mural from Onward. Yeah, he told me himself. He's
so helpful, Forky. These guys have a big-headed Titans feel to them, and that's not okay. They're
also far too fast. Yeah, we get it, Woody. You're resourceful. Also, this counts as the Mickey in
the movie. Last time I saw someone waiting to fight with such anticipation, they cut Darth
Maul in half. You know it's coming the second time, and it still lands so
perfectly. And a third time's a charm. Pretty much everything Keen Peel do is pitch perfect,
but this entire bit is a real showcase. Also, she lives at 237. Can't escape the Shining.
Is that a real code? Could I use that code? Someone has to have tried it by now.
Aw, Duggs did. He's so small. It's no shame to short kings. He's just,
he's like really small. Well, Woody, if you'd paid a little better attention,
maybe you would have learned their names like the sweetest man alive, Mr. Keanu Reeves.
Fun fact, these poses were Keanu Reeves' idea, and he even jumped up on a table to
demonstrate while recording lines for the part. Truth, nothing more disappointing,
but I wouldn't have a man to do like Réjean. Well, we finally gave Woody his win for parkour
skills, and I'm not going to sleep on Bo Peep this time. She is a parkour master.
Love the lighting here with the sparkly chandelier shining on them like a love glow. Get you a
partner that looks at you like that. If you want to know someone loves you, catch them looking at
you with love when you're looking at something else with love. Trust me, works every time.
Wait, it's an actual fork? Spork, which I actually kind of love because kids don't
know what sporks are. Still kills. What were we saying about Bo Staff? Yike, dark.
Although I do love the addition of the lion sounds for the cat. Really adds to the toy dare.
This seems like something someone might notice, but what do I know? Someone has been stealing my
pens and socks and also utility knives? That one's weird. Hope your toys are staying safe out there.
Nobody wants this. I do. Why? Because. Why? Because it's all I have left to do.
Oof, the truth comes out. It's called loyalty. Something a lost toy wouldn't understand.
Oh, but that brief but immediate look of regret in his face. Comforting him when he skinned his
knee. Love the tone shift here as Gabby separates herself from the dummies and steps into the light.
You've been there through all their ups and downs. Was it as wonderful as it sounds?
And hey, they finally flipped the script this time. It's not a bad toy pretending to be nice,
but a nice toy who was misunderstood as bad. Gabby never had a chance to be with a kid because
she was always broken. Hal must be inside there. Yeah, just like the beyond of Bed Bath and,
the beyond that's beyond infinity could be a cabinet. Another eerie point of view shot giving
off I just woke up in a bathtub of ice missing a kidney vibes. Thank you, agreed. Wow. Wow,
that's brutal. Maybe we haven't seen her villain arc yet. Thank you. Appropriate reaction. Yes,
we can. What? What is it? I think it must be illegal to have Keanu in your movie and not
have him distracted and confused at some point. Right turn ahead. Huh? Does the GPS sound funny
to you? Not it sounded funny. Yeah. Like somewhere between Mabel Pines, Sarah Lynn
from Horsin' Around or that creepy fan Mel from Flight of the Concords. Right. Another right?
Really? Turn right. Although it's the similarity to Louise Belcher that commands obedience.
This is 40. Exactly. Duke Kaboom would never repeat a stunt. No, he'd never do that. This
is meant to be encouraging, which I guess it is. I guess it's just odd how encouragement
and gaslighting can sort of blend together. Réjean would be proud and if he wasn't,
I'm sure Bastien or Mathieu or even Olivier would love it. Of course it's Buttercup since his goal
is to get their dad in jail. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Hey, they finally got to use
their plan for good. Also, fun fact, anyone who's been to a carnival knows this is an actual trick
they use to get you over to their booth. Hugging. Honestly, this explains a lot. We all now have a
solid reason for why dads get so angry at family trips. Oh man, he's holding onto the edge just
like the box the last time you lost her. That'll get ya. Bonnie, we'll be okay. If you're feeling
a little sad about this, keep in mind that Woody had been missing for most of the movie too and
when Bonnie opened her backpack, she only said, Forky! Wow, they even have Bo's respirations
pick up. Wait, did Toys breathe air? And they use that bouquet lighting again that gives off
the same feeling as Bo's lamp. This isn't sad. I'm not sad. But I do love that Buzz and Woody's
relationship gets a special moment and that it's Buzz who releases Woody. Bonnie, we'll be okay.
So long, Forky. Ha, Forky finally closed his eyes. Forky? Who's watching the door?
Nothing like a comedic Forky bit to end the otherwise very difficult and emotional beat.
Toy Story 5 should be called Toy Story Kids all about Woody and Bo Peep's half-porcelain,
half-fabric sheep cowboys. To infinity... Yep. I love the way they take this silly phrase to
actually mean something for their relationship. Hanging from a carnival stand beats the
alternative. Good for you, Karen. Ironically, not to be confused with this Karen. Checks out,
pretty much the best moment in the entire movie. You really have laser eyes. Yeah.
You just can't beat them walking towards each other. How am I? That's fair. Yes.
Come back, Carl Weathers. He finally got that high five. I like this movie. As part of the
Toy Story series, it works really well. It can just be confusing to try to reconcile why it's
trilogy. We talked about how Toy Story 3 was really the closure to Andy's story and obviously
Woody's relationship with Andy, but it wasn't Woody's entire story. Woody has had a mantra
throughout all four of these movies and it's something like, be there for your kid. This
movie flips his obsessive loyalty on its head in a couple different ways. When you think about it,
the main conflict with the main baddie is sort of silly in hindsight. I get that Woody's voice
box is a part of what makes him him, but ultimately only as a toy, not an individual.
So with Woody deciding to go off on his own with Bo, the voice box doesn't really matter that much.
He can still talk fine without it. The other obvious flip of his fixation on taking care of
his kid is the realization that he's not doing it for his kid anymore. Like Buzz says, Bonnie will
be okay. It's made obvious to us throughout and it should be obvious to Woody, but he's struggling
with the most important thing for any toy and really most sentient beings, purpose. His purpose
has always been a foregone conclusion. He has a kid and he needs to do whatever he can to make
that kid happy. When the kid no longer needs him, his purpose becomes nebulous. The interesting
thing is that Woody has always sat in a place of privilege. He was Andy's number one. Even when
Buzz came on the scene, Woody was vital to Andy's happiness. The same couldn't be said for Wheezy or
the army men that were a dime a dozen. So Woody's speeches about being there for Andy had to have
rang a tad hollow for them. Bo Peep learned that lesson fairly early on. Her purpose was to comfort
Molly while she slept. She served that purpose and then Molly had no use for her after. So I guess
I'm making one of those, hey, privilege can actually make things harder statements because
life is hard if it's always been easy or something dumb like that. And that sounds insane, but like
I've said before, your perception is your reality. A slight scuff on your Balenciaga, that's a shoe,
right? Is going to seem worse to a toy that's new in box compared to a cat shredding you if you've
already been sewn back together multiple times. I'm not excusing anyone here. The point is that
Woody had to work through that in this movie. He wasn't Bonnie's number one. Coming to terms with
that allowed him to realize he could serve a higher purpose by giving up his voice box for
Gabby and helping Bo get a bunch of other toys to new kids. Weird tangent, but I stand by it.
Feel bad for your upper class rich neighbors who've never had any hardships? Yeah, that seems
right. No, the point is that you never know what someone is going through. You never know the
baggage, the past trauma, the chips on shoulders, the hardship, disability, sadness, or anything.
So be kind, be patient and understanding because we're all just trying to get through the day.
It took a very impassioned speech from Gabby to finally get through to Woody, but he did
eventually come around and realized what he could do for her. I doubt this is the end of
the Toy Story movies. I'd watch Bo and Woody adventuring across America or like California,
I guess. I can't imagine how long it would take them to walk across the country, but I'd love to
see the entire cast back together or even just Tom Hanks and Annie Potts. They both crushed the
emotional scenes they're in together. I mean, there's no one I'd remove and I'd beg to have
Keen peel back to, but for now we'll have to see how light year is. The movie, I did all of these
four that really isn't technically in the same series, but it looks fun and hopefully it will
help keep the series alive because it's nothing if not unique. And actually Tim Allen toy versus
Chris Evans toy could be a fun short. So get on that. That's it for Toy Story. Next week,
one of those audience critics splits that I love to tackle. Hint, critics didn't love it.
Oh yeah. Duke, Duke, we need to- Hold on, one more. Oh yeah. What brings you back?
