Hi guys, this is Megan with the blog, WilsonHomestead.com, and welcome to the next vlog.
I just looked out the window, and I was admiring how green the pasture is starting to look.
And I suddenly see that the neighbor's irrigation is on, which means that we can start our irrigation pipes.
And I am, like, so excited about that. I'm probably a little overly excited about that, but...
We have a lot of tiny little baby chicks. We have two broody mamas.
One of them is sitting on, I think, five or six silky eggs.
And then we have 20 or so eggs in an incubator.
So we're hoping that when they hatch, we're going to split them between the moms,
and give the one mom that's just sitting on fake eggs, we're going to give her 10,
and then we're going to give, probably not quite 10, we'll hatch, we'll give the other ones to her,
along with whatever of the silky eggs she hatches,
so hopefully they can just take care of all the chicks for us,
and we don't have to run the brooder, or our heat lamps.
So, let's hope this goes well, and I am so excited to see all the baby chicks, and see what hatches.
Should we pull the lid off, I guess?
Um, I can lift it up, if you want.
Well, just tip it up this way.
Ready?
Yep.
Just candle the eggs.
The right side on the candle.
Oh, looks real good.
Little baby chicken.
Silky.
Wow, do it on...
Oh, nice.
It's alive.
Wow, you can see it moving. Hold on, let me try to focus this.
Wow.
There's plenty more where that came from.
Is that pipped?
Nice.
Oh, nice, that's a big one.
Got nothing in it.
Infernal.
Big self.
Come see them.
What do you think?
You want to look closer?
You can bend down there and look at them, if you want.
Those are little baby chickens.
Tiny ones.
There's a little yellow one and a black one.
Oh, actually, that's a silky.
A little white one.
Can I open it?
No.
So it can come out?
Silky?
No, not yet.
Regular chicken.
We have to let them get warmed up.
What?
We have to let them get warmed up first.
So that means that Mama Silky's eggs are going to hatch any day too.
Yeah.
Nice.
I want to go in there.
Recollect it.
I want to go in there.
Yeah, no.
It's not big enough for you.
I guess that there's eight now.
Let's see.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Wait, am I right?
Nine.
I was close.
I thought about doing nine.
They're pretty cute.
So there's four silkies.
And five black ones.
Are they all going to just be black?
Well, I guess Dwayne...
Well, those barred rocks would be black as chicks, I suppose.
Just take 10.
We're going to go give them to the mama chick.
What?
The mama hen.
Hide back in there.
One of them pooped.
Put your other hand over it.
It doesn't jump out.
It's so cute.
It's a silkie.
You don't have to step under her.
She's got some mostly fake eggs.
I think there's some real ones.
I'm worried.
For some reason.
There's a lot of chicks under his hoe.
It's hard to fit them.
I'm done.
Hey, don't be too close.
No.
No, she will scare the other chickens.
She'll jump out and fly right by you.
She'll flap in your hair.
We're going to move the sheep over to the yard because the grass is getting so tall.
This way.
I'm going to go on the road and block them.
Luke's going to try to get them over there with grain.
Hopefully Penny will follow.
We're about to have company over.
It's kind of risky doing this right before people are going to get here.
Then everyone can come up close and see them in the yard and all the lambs, which will be fun.
Let's hope this goes well.
Are you going to help me block?
Are you going to help me block the sheep?
Block the sheep.
So they don't go down the road?
Good.
I'll protect you.
They're not following.
She's wandering.
No.
Oh, here she comes.
All right, here we go.
All right.
Now, if you leave the bucket there, then you could go around and chase the other ones.
I don't think they see her.
Don't go this way, guys.
Do you see Penny?
Not this way.
Don't come this way.
There we go.
Okay.
Nope.
Just don't push them.
Just let them wait.
Maybe they'll see her now.
They're moving that way slowly.
Nice.
It worked.
We got a little lamb.
There's so many of them.
Now Penny only has one of her babies.
That's so funny how they don't really care if they're by her.
Good girl.
She better be careful.
Hilda.
I hope you're happy.
Can I explain?
This silky chick was shrink-wrapped because it was like this when we opened it.
Cold air hitting it can make the membrane inside just stick to the chick and now it can't get out by itself.
So we're going to help it.
Little guy.
He almost made it.
Yeah, we should have helped him earlier.
Yeah, he's...
Yeah, he's dead.
Don't see him breathing.
That's a bummer.
I thought he needed more time but we should have helped him earlier.
Sometimes that happens.
Yep.
Little guy.
Alright, how many more, Hedge?
Six.
Nice.
Alright, guys.
Hand back a little bit.
I'm going to take him out to the second mama hen.
Can you back up?
Alright.
Aw, he's so cute.
They're all black.
Let's put it in so we can take it out to the mama.
You're very fragile.
Taking his head out.
Alright.
Looks like these ones did good.
She accepts them really well.
This one has eggs that she's been sitting on.
And I think she's got a couple hatched.
Alright, let's see.
Mama.
Alright, they're all under there.
Six more.
So she's got seven.
And this one has ten.
Look at them all.
Aw.
There's one like hiding in her feathers.
Alright, we'll see if we can get this one to go breed on these.
These big clutch eggs there.
Aw, the ducks are out.
So we just gave the second mom six chicks.
And she only had one of her own hatch.
Her other ones are kind of further behind.
So hopefully they'll still hatch.
See the sheep.
Just walking out to get the mail.
I've got my doTERRA order.
So I'm excited to see.
I don't even remember what I ordered.
So that'll be fun.
I got another package here.
I don't even remember what that is either.
So it's always exciting to get packages.
Because I don't remember what is supposed to come.
But the mom we gave those ten chicks to yesterday.
Is doing amazing with them.
She accepted them so well.
When they want to come back under her.
She lifts up for them.
And she kind of tucks them in with her beak.
So she's just doing really well.
I'm so happy with how well she took them in.
And I feel really confident she's going to do an even better job.
Than we would be able to do if we had them in the brooder.
Because having them raised by the mama hens.
Doesn't really compare to anything else.
Sheep are on the porch.
Where's Hilda?
Hilda you poor little dog.
Did you get scared?
I thought she was trying to get you.
Let's see.
If the rest of these eggs have died.
There's not very many.
I think there's three.
Here just pull the lid off.
Hold on.
Hilda.
There's five.
No movements.
Let me see.
Yeah it's probably.
Well let's see.
No pips.
I mean we can still open them up.
Yeah that's got a giant air.
That's still got veins.
I mean we could pip them and see.
Oh there's a guy.
It's not moving.
Tried.
That one looks like it.
That's a hole.
But that feels very crusty.
Here hold this.
I might need to take these to the sink.
Probably gone.
Little thing just couldn't quite make it out.
Cross beak.
Couldn't get air.
Couldn't even get through the membrane.
This one still got a lot of egg yolk but he is not moving.
He should have absorbed that egg yolk by now.
So he died like several days ago.
So these five all didn't make it.
Some of these still have the yolk so it died days ago.
I mean if it died when it still had the yolk we couldn't have saved it anyway.
So that's a bummer but out of that many eggs we started with it's not terrible.
It's just always kind of sad.
So I guess we can turn the incubator off now.
And those hens are doing a real good job with their chicks we gave them.
I'm going to end the vlog here.
Thank you guys for watching.
I hope you enjoyed seeing all that.
And I will see you in the next video.
Bye.
Say bye.
Bye.
You say bye bye.
Bye bye.
