FRANKENSTEIN (1931) FIRST TIME WATCHING MOVIE REACTION
Welcome back to scary, but not too scary, October.
See, we've got red lights,
we've got pumpkins and black flowers.
Guys, I just love seasons and themes
and being festive as crap, just basic, okay?
Which is making me so excited
to watch these movies tonight.
Double feature, Frankie double feature.
I like to call it, I'm going to watch the Frankenstein.
From almost 100 years ago, 91.
It's from 1931, I believe.
I had a Halloween comedy poll
and the winner was Shaun of the Dead,
which I already reacted to.
And then the runner up, which I wanted to watch as well,
was Young Frankenstein.
Well, it really helped to watch Robin Hood,
Prince of Thieves, and then the spoof Men in Tights
in a row.
So I think it's going to help to watch Frankenstein
and then the spoof Young Frankenstein.
I don't know anything about this movie.
I don't know if it's in black and white.
I don't know anything.
Actually, we were just talking about,
someone suggested doing Frankenstein
for my book club this month.
Like the Mary, the book, right?
That got people talking about the story of Frankenstein.
I realized that I don't really know
the story of Frankenstein.
I actually, you know,
I obviously know Frankenstein.
Green square head, like he's a monster
created by a scientist.
You know, I know the pop culture kid movie stuff.
So I'm kind of excited to see this.
Like I said before in other reactions,
I'm always hesitant,
but I can't get as excited for old movies.
But then I watch them
and just really am surprised every time
and usually just love them dearly.
So with that said,
let's start watching Frankenstein 1931.
I don't know.
Is it 1931?
Let's see.
Oh, this says included among the 1,001 movies
you must see before you die.
Okay.
Remember here's my Patreon.
If you want to vote on polls,
like Halloween comedy polls,
actually we're doing a YouTube poll right now.
Scary, but not too scary.
There's two polls.
The winners are going to go into a final poll.
It's looking like it's going to be 28 days later.
What have I done?
Okay.
Let's watch Frankenstein.
We're about to unfold the story of Frankenstein.
This is different.
Who sought to create a man after his own image
without reckoning upon God.
He's one of the strangest tales ever told.
He deals with the two great mysteries of creation,
life and death.
It may shock you.
I don't know if this is like real or part of the act.
So if any of you feel that you do not care
to subject your nerves to such a strain,
well, we warn you.
Ooh.
Sets the tone.
There's probably going to be like 11 minutes of these credits
because it always is in these older movies.
Look what I found to try.
Werther's Caramel Apple and Werther's Pumpkin Spice.
They're both like the soft caramels,
which are 10,000 times better.
I know Werther's are like an old lady treat,
but oh my gosh, I love them.
I love the soft caramels.
I had these ones in Canada that were chocolate filled.
I think they were called Eclair, like Werther Eclair.
They were so good.
Oh, we're going, just talking about candy, sorry.
Oh, hey, black and white.
Okay.
What in the world?
Why is there a hooded skeleton in the cemetery?
Hi, ho.
I'm sorry.
Oh, they're going to steal.
Hi, the moon's rising.
Look at the skeleton in the background.
Who does that at a cemetery?
Oh my gosh.
He's just resting, waiting for a new life to come.
Is that?
It's still here.
Climb up and cut the rope.
We're stealing another body?
Here's a knife.
No music.
Look out.
The neck's broken.
Brain is useless.
We must find another brain.
Okay.
Here we have one of the most perfect specimens
of the human brain,
and here the abnormal brain of the typical criminal.
Observe, ladies and gentlemen,
the scarcity of convolutions on the frontal lobe
as compared to that of the normal brain.
All of these degenerate characteristics
check amazingly with the case history
of the dead man before us,
whose life was one of brutality and murder.
Oh, wee.
This poor hunchbacked character.
Normal brain.
Oh, oh, just take the whole jar.
Okay, why'd we take the lid off?
Okay.
Oh.
Aw, and the professor was just raving
at what a great specimen it was for study.
I want there to be music.
I'm so glad you've come.
Victor, you must help me.
Of course I'll help you.
I've read this over and over again,
but they're just words that I can't understand.
You must have faith in me, Elizabeth.
My work must come first, even before you.
At night, the winds howl in the mountains.
Prying eyes can't peer into my secret.
What can he mean?
What did he say then?
I am living in an abandoned old watchtower
close to the town of Goldstadt.
Only my assistant is here to help me with my experiment.
The very day we announced our engagement,
he told me of his experiment.
He said he was on the verge of a discovery
so terrific that he doubted his own sanity.
Oh, my.
It was a strange look in his eyes.
His words carried me right away.
Of course, I've never doubted him,
but still I worry I can't help it.
Victor, have you seen him?
About three weeks ago,
I asked him if I might visit his laboratory.
He just glared at me and said he'd let no one go there.
His manner was very strange.
Oh, no.
Is this his fiance?
I'll go to Dr. Baldwin,
Henry's old professor in medical school.
Perhaps he can tell me more about all this.
Who's this guy?
Is he trying to move in?
I shouldn't like that.
I'm far too fond of you.
I wish you were.
Oh, look at her dress.
Good night, Victor, and thank you.
Don't worry.
Promise?
I won't.
Victor.
What is it?
I'm coming with you.
But, Elizabeth, you can't do that.
I must.
I'll be back in a minute.
Sir Frankenstein is a most brilliant young man,
yet so erratic and he troubles me.
I'm worried about Henry.
Why has he left the university?
He was doing so well.
Well, you know his research
is in the field of electrobiology.
We're far in advance of our theories
here at the university.
In fact, they had reached a most advanced stage.
They were becoming dangerous.
Dun, dun, dun.
His insane ambition to create life.
How?
Why?
The bodies we use in our dissecting room
for lecture purposes were not perfect enough
for his experiments, he said.
He wished us to supply him with other bodies.
I told him that his demands were unreasonable,
and so he left the university to work on Hampton.
The bodies of animals.
What are the lives of a few rabbits and dogs?
You do not quite get what I mean.
Frankenstein was interested only in human life.
Herr Frankenstein.
So Frankenstein is the doctor, not the monster.
That doesn't make any sense.
Why does everyone call this guy Frankenstein?
Why do you come with us?
I'm sorry, but Herr Frankenstein is no longer my pupil.
But he respects you.
I warned you, but if you wish it, I will go.
Oh, that was easy.
Seems like a normal place to set up your lab.
Fritz!
Hello.
You better be paying this poor man.
He's sure bossy.
Oh my.
He's losing it.
So,
did he like stitch that body together with multiple bodies
or just the one they stole from the?
Is he gonna be nice to her?
Oh, nice to see you too, Lizzie.
Oh, he's gonna show them.
I feel like they're gonna frown upon the body snatching.
Uh.
Thunder doesn't sound like movie thunder.
Here's my answer.
Oh, he's putting on a show now.
Oh my.
Is this it?
Still looks dead.
This is where it comes from.
It's alive.
Is that what that's from?
Is this the dad?
I like his graduation cap.
Ha, who's the burger master?
Well, what do you want?
If it's trouble, go away.
Oh, there's no trouble, sir.
There's nothing but trouble.
I brought you these flowers.
Thank you, Herr Vogel.
Both in my private and official capacities
as burger master.
When will the wedding be, if you please?
There'll be no wedding at all.
Village is already prepared.
Well, tell them to unprepare.
But sir, everything is ready.
I know that.
But the village.
Good day, Mrs. Vogel.
Good day, Herr Leitz.
Good day, Herr Vogel.
Good day, Herr Baron.
And good riddance to you.
Henry must come home,
if I have to fetch him myself.
No, no, Baron.
Why are they hiding it for him?
There is another woman,
and I'm going to find her.
Not a woman.
Come and sit down, Doctor.
This creature of yours should be kept under guard.
He will prove dangerous.
Dangerous?
Poor old barman.
Have you never wanted to do anything that was dangerous?
You never wanted to look beyond the clouds and the stars?
And what changes the darkness into light?
Well, if I could discover just one of these things,
I wouldn't care if they did think I was crazy.
Your success is intoxicated.
Wake up.
Here we have a fiend whose brain
must be given time to develop.
It was an abnormal criminal brain.
It came from your own laboratory.
The brain that was stolen from my laboratory
was a criminal brain.
Oh, well.
After all, it's only a piece of dead tissue.
Only evil can come at it.
Where is it?
I believe in this monster, as you call it.
But think of Elizabeth.
You're far.
Elizabeth believes it.
My father never believes in anyone.
Elizabeth may be a little weary after...
So far, he's been kept in complete darkness.
Wait till I bring him into the light.
Here he comes.
Let's turn out the light.
Oh, boy.
Yeah, that's exactly what I pictured him to look like.
Why is his head so square?
Come in.
He seems nice, a little.
Sit down.
You see it.
It understands.
Watch.
So this is an actor,
and they're doing all this with, like, stage makeup and...
Take care now, Frankenstein, take care.
So I know in the birds,
I think it was, like, a choice to have no music,
but I feel like this one could really benefit from it.
He's like a little child.
Go and sit down.
Frankenstein, Frankenstein, where is it?
Where is it?
Why don't you get away with that torture?
Oh, boy.
What?
Um...
Let's come away.
He has the strength of ten men.
How does he have the strength of ten men?
Leave it alone.
What is Fritz's deal?
That's so mean.
What's that?
Oh!
It hung.
Um...
Oh, my gosh.
I thought this, thought this was the needle.
Oh, that's not enough plan, guys.
Oh!
Did he?
Oh, I thought he killed him.
Oh, man.
What has this doctor gotten himself into?
Um...
Not a patient man, is he?
What?
Is he just in shock?
Exhausted?
Oh.
She's got a good point.
Oh, no.
I have this feeling that we'll perform dissection.
Oh!
Dr. W is in for it.
Oh, my God.
He's not even strapped down, is he?
Oh!
How does it know how to kill?
My gosh.
He's out, people.
The best man that's in love with your future wife.
He seems well.
It's weird hearing them talk about Frankenstein
as just a name.
Like, in my mind, it's a monster.
Is he like the royalty of this town?
Oh, no.
Please don't hurt the baby.
No.
That's not the reaction I expected from her.
Aw.
Cheers.
She's darling.
The innocence.
No.
Is that little girl okay?
Oh, boy.
It's not a nice song, I gotta tell ya.
Is anything wrong?
I'm still very concerned about that little girl.
Aw.
Um.
Did he just lock his bride from the outside?
That's not okay.
I mean, I guess he's trying to protect her.
Oh, my gosh.
Can you imagine?
Oh, my gosh.
The window.
No.
Poor baby.
This is horrifying.
What, did you guys stop at the bells?
Look at those pants.
Yes, they know about him now,
but they don't know that he's Frankenstein's monster.
Oh, that poor little baby.
Oh, the sound.
They don't fine tune it much back then, I feel like.
Reminds me of Beauty and the Beast.
The noises.
Oh, boy, I would not.
That barking is very squeaky.
Yes, it is.
Is this the laboratory?
I don't think it is.
This is just somewhere.
Oh, he's not dead, right?
He's just passed out?
Nope.
He's alive.
Oh, my gosh.
How does this end?
Oh, those screams.
Oh, my gosh.
Is he okay?
Is Elizabeth okay?
That was weird.
What?
All these movies I've been watching lately
have the most sudden endings.
I honestly, I don't know what it was with that ending.
Like, why were the servants like giggling about the wine?
Was he okay back there?
Herr Frankenstein, was he alive?
I couldn't tell.
I feel like I'm missing something.
So that was the classic story of Frankenstein.
He died in that building, right?
No, I thought Frankenstein like,
well, I thought Frankenstein was the monster,
not the doctor.
But then he just like killed everybody.
It felt fun to watch that during October.
In the classic story, is Frankenstein like more tortured
between good and bad?
I mean, I guess I did have moments
where you feel sorry for him.
And maybe I'm just being hypersensitive,
but like the sound was so screechy.
Like I said in the reaction, like not fine-tuned.
There was no music or like, you know,
the dogs barking in the distance.
It's just like dogs and violins and screaming.
I don't know.
Okay, I can only imagine what jokes Mel Brooks
is going to make in Young Frankenstein.
Thank you so much for watching along with me
and let's watch Young Frankenstein.
