Helping Out Up Bryant's Gully
What a slimy mess all that is. As I've said about Bryants before, as soon as you enter it
you pretty much start to get committed to it straight away because it'd be very difficult
to turn around. I don't like it when there's no rocks. Don't trust vegetation.
Oh no, look at that. See, that is just slime. Even on the flat bits of rock there's no grip
My name is Brave Dave. I'm in Bryants Gully and I suspected the stream might be a bit wetter
than it usually is because we had torrential rain two days ago. So even though it's absolutely
boiling today, the streams are a bit fuller than normal and the rock looks like this.
To be honest, I'm not feeling it at all. Bryants Gully is a grade two on a good day but when it's
all soaked like this, I don't know what you'd class it as, just very dangerous because there's
nothing to hold on to. There's no worries for me about completely bypassing this first section.
Heading off to the sides which is no easy feat to be honest. There's no clear path or anything.
There's a lot of scrambling on dodgy vegetation but it's not soaking wet and that's the important
thing at the moment. It's also baking hot and I don't have any protection because I left my cap
at home like an absolute idiot. So hopefully not going to burn red raw today but who knows.
It is 10 to 11, Sunday 27th June 2021. So steep, even on the side escapes you slip on this and
you're going lying down. Plus there's crap handholds on parts of it like this part.
That. Let's go back on myself which is a bit tricky. I can't see where I'm putting my feet.
All right, the reason I avoided that is because it's just loose dusty slopey rock up there.
It's like either this stuff which is, that's not the best grip or there's just more dust there and
no rocks to hold on to that are actually in the ground and I'm not gaining momentum on that to
fall down there thanks very much. I've climbed back into the gully for this bit because I just
want to see what it's like and I know an escape route if need be so let's check that out.
I'm going to do this part because I've got to put my feet on these soaking rocks.
I might have to do a beached whale approach to this rock.
Nothing elegant about that.
Yeah climb out of there if I have to which might be a good idea because again everything's soaked
including me right now getting splashed although it's kind of tempting.
Again, no you can't risk it. Consequences are too serious if I make a mistake on that.
Let's climb out of this little thing.
It's not so simple because there's not a lot to hold on to here.
I have to push against this slab.
That's better. Once I've got a handhold like that I'm good. I can do whatever I want moving my feet
around knowing that I'm not going to slip down. My backpack's grinding against that rock.
See it's quite tall that bit, quite steep. Even climbing out here you're nowhere near done
because it's so steep. Look at that. I have to climb out through that.
That's definitely not going to move. My foot can go like that. Oh yeah that's better.
Let's gain some ground now.
Just whiz past all the gully bit down there which is the horrible wet part.
Very nice. I thought I could hear metal.
All right guys. Hiya. Oh no. I'm going up but as you would have seen the rock's horrible isn't it?
Well what I did is I skated up the gully a bit earlier on. Yeah so I'm just coming this way but
I heard metal so I thought oh that's not a natural sound. So um how do you get onto that bit there?
Difficult. Well no I'm just a scrambler. I'm not a rock climber. Is it just you two then?
Oh three of us right. The bit I'm on now is all right.
All right I think they're all right. I'm not the only one beaten by the wet rock.
You saw earlier I met these three guys uh stuck up Brian's gully on a bit so I'm
taking them under my wing. We've avoided the actual gully because it's soaking. We've come
but now we're heading back into the gully because it's the easy part
and this heather and scree is not pleasant to climb at all.
I'm just gonna get them to the top because that's what they want to get.
See how that works out especially at the very top which I've already warned them about.
Very loose scree so we'll be very careful there. But yeah it's looking good so far.
That is the top. It's quite far but I think we'll we'll cover ground faster because it's not
heathery. It's just rock. We'll go along there and then it'll come to me when we're there because
I don't remember the exact route from like here but when I'm on it. Hey? Not at this point. It's
easier to be on the outside of this this ridge back here. Yeah but I think the phone needs to
be a bit better than mine is. No because there's low processing power. We're on the third stage
of the Bryant's Gully. Just that to go. Climbing out the heather which is good because I don't like heather much.
No offence to anyone called Heather but I know the route I go up is just there because normally
I'd be down there. We're climbing out the side because it's easier. It's more stable.
This is Dragan. He's gonna be my newest subscriber. I'll send you some screen caps from this.
You could be like oh yeah that was me and my family got stuck at Bryant's Gully.
No you didn't get stuck you just got delayed.
Found a way and then she didn't believe you.
Yeah we got stranded. Yeah it's not a nice feeling when you're stranded up there.
Yeah we'll have a nice little scramble here. See this rock as long as it's not actually
because it's so much to hold on to. Yeah you have to test every hold here. Right okay so here
it's uh you can't see it from down there but there's a lot of loose rock here so be real careful
especially when there's people below. So we'll get you up here first and get you out of the way.
You see all that? You don't want that to like roll loose do you when there's someone stood right there?
I'll stay here and help the others come up and you move out to the right so there's no chance of
it's just waiting to happen is it? It's like one of them like 2p machines.
Yeah and then when you get the jackpot of it just boom everything falls.
I'm wondering if there's any better way for them to come around just because. Tell you what if you
climb out to the right onto the heather so we're away from the rocks and then we'll wait for these
two to see how they do. Straight up the smooth rock that's great we're on the final stretch of
Even on this left-hand part just be real careful.
It is quick and easy but there's so much slower up here than when there's people under you.
Right they're not directly below at the moment so I'm just going to get out of the way
bend around to the left and then we're good. Oh yeah and then we'll go right to the top there in
a moment. There's a great pillar around here for taking selfies on but your mum probably won't
like you doing that. Well done everyone we've done Bryant's Gully we're out safely at the top.
Let's have a view this is this is the very top where you can see over the edge
so don't fall over this you can see it zigzagging all the way up
and all the heather that we trudged through for so long.
