My name is Alex and the other day I decided that I wanted to go on holiday so after a quick scroll
on Airbnb I found this interesting accommodation, a shepherd's hut. In fact it was a rather
luxurious shepherd's hut so I booked up four nights at this pretty cool looking place.
I live near Brighton in southeast England so I drove about four hours north to a little village
where the hut was located. The broader area is known as the Peak District, a vast landscape
consisting of rolling hill farmland, deep valleys, sharp peaks and beautiful little English villages.
It seemed like the perfect place for a relaxing holiday. I arrived on Monday morning,
had a quick look inside the hut and yeah I was pretty excited to be staying here for the next
few days. I've never actually gone on holiday anywhere like this before so I got settled in
and also lit up the barbecue. The host of the accommodation had very very kindly left a bottle
of the local beer for me in the fridge. In fact it's brewed just a short walk down the valley
from the hut. I actually went walking there on one of the days of my holiday. It's pretty cool
to drink something which was made just down the road. Barbecue sweetcorn is seriously the tastiest
thing ever. I absolutely love it when it's grilled over the fire like this. I also stuck on some
chicken. Delicious! The feeling of being on holiday was pretty nice. No responsibility, just some pure
downtime. I set up my bed ready for some good sleep and I have to say I was pretty impressed
with the use of space in this tiny hut. I've got a bed and it's massive. This bed just folded
straight out of the wall and now it replaces that table so I've got a really big sleeping area.
That's pretty sweet. You might be wondering why I chose to go on holiday in the middle of nowhere
completely alone. Not even with some friends or family. I actually just really enjoy my own
company and I felt like I needed some time completely away from anyone so I could just
think about life on my own. That sounds cringe doesn't it? I just wanted to you know get away
from everyone so I could just you know chill completely out. That's what I wanted to do.
Anyway a good night's sleep is exactly what I needed and on that double king size flip out
bed from the side of the wall I certainly got a brilliant night's sleep. I actually really like
mornings however hard it is to get up early in the morning sometimes. I'm always in a decent mood
early morning. You know nothing's gone wrong yet but the day has only just started so everything
is good and you've got the whole day ahead of you to create something brilliant and do something new
and it's quite exciting. So what to do with the day ahead? Well actually because I chose to go on
holiday in this part of the world there's not actually much around apart from farmland and
a ton of sheep so I guess I was going to go for a long long long walk in the countryside
and try and make friends with the local sheep. What do you want mate? Wake up everybody.
That hill really got me. My legs hurt, really hurt. You might think that walking is a pretty
boring repetitive activity but for some reason I love it. There really isn't anything exciting
about walking so I'm unsure why I enjoy doing it. I guess it does give you exercise and it
allows you to explore new places which is a good thing I suppose. I walked for most of the day
totalling 20 kilometres which is more walking than I usually do in a day and here's the proof
on my heart healthy fitness app on my iPhone. See I walked 20 kilometres. Anyway my legs sure felt it
they were in so much pain so back at the hut I put on the fire and relaxed into the evening.
Another day in the shepherd's hut. I was thinking this is the perfect size house living space for
one person. I think the best thing about it is that you can see every part of the house at the
same time so you never get freaked out that there's someone downstairs or there's someone
in the garage. It's probably not the best thing about it but it's one of the good things. I've
had a lovely warm shower, fire's on as well because it was really cold last night. I'm
gonna cook up some breakfast. For those of you concerned about my health I don't normally eat
four eggs for breakfast this was just a one-off special occasion seeing as I was you know on
holiday. Perfect that was good. Another day and another walk because there really isn't anything
else to do in this area but on this particular walk things started to get interesting. I was
strolling along the path when I stumbled across a hidden, mysterious, alluring, ancient, old,
abandoned, secret. No it was just a broken old farm building and nothing more. An empty
buxom water bottle, a yellow bucket, some bags and a broken roof. A few days of work to do this up
to be my new home. I just want to show you how luxurious this hut is because back in the 16th
century shepherds sure weren't as lucky as I am this week. The hut not only had a double huge bed
that you've already seen but it was also equipped with an oven and gas hobs so I could cook food
with ease. It had a fridge to keep my food cold, a proper bathroom with a shower and hot water. It
even had wi-fi. Geez we live in a lucky time in earth's existence that's for sure. And to top it
off it had a beautiful view and a load of interesting wildlife in the surrounding area.
The highlights for me was seeing a herd of red deer. Interestingly they are actually
Britain's largest land mammal and also native to the UK unlike some of the other deer species
so it was really cool to see them. I also spotted my favourite bird of all time a barn owl which I
was very excited about and on one of my walks I came across a owl box and I could hear babies
inside the box which was a pretty special moment. I also saw this animal but I couldn't tell whether
it was a large rabbit or a hare so if anyone knows leave a comment I'd be interested to find out.
There was one more challenge I had to face, the mighty roaches. A ridge line that looked quite
big. It was the last day of my trip and my legs ached a lot but I wanted to walk this as it looked
pretty epic from the distance. I walked some 20 kilometres all the way to this white concrete
thing which I guess means I got to the highest point or something so yeah completed it mate.
Then I proceeded to make the long walk back to the hut. It had come to the end of my holiday
and after spending five days here I felt rather attached to this cute little shepherd's hut.
I didn't really want to go home but I had to because otherwise I'd probably be thrown out
by the owner so I said my farewells and drove back to Brighton. We will see you soon for another
video. See you sheep, have a good one.
