Hi there, I'm Amy and I'm going to do a video today that participates with Carolyn from
Homesteading Family to share my three tips for becoming more self-sufficient in 2022.
Now if you have seen any of my videos you know that this is my topic. I set a goal for myself
about nine months ago to be self-sufficient by September of 2022. Now today is the first day of
2022 so that means I've got nine more months to achieve my goal which actually is in one of my
tips. So why don't we get into the video. My first tip for becoming more self-sufficient in 2022
is to set a goal. That goal should be a SMART goal. Specific, measurable, attainable,
realistic, and time-bound. So my goal for being self-sufficient by September of 2022
is specific. It is measurable so I can say I am going to be off-grid for 30 days. I'm not going
to go to the grocery store. I'm going to provide my own food, water, electricity, all of that for
a 30-day period and it's attainable. I've been working on it already for nine months acquiring
the skills that I need and starting to get some of the supplies that I need and it's time-bound.
I have a very specific date by the end of September 2022. So even if your goals are
to start rainwater harvesting, that can be a goal that will help you be more self-sufficient
and you can set yourself a date and achieve your goal by that time. No one really achieves goals
by just haphazardly, you know, trying to do something. If you want to be self-sufficient,
you need to set small goals for yourself and achieve them in a systematic way. I'm very practical
so that's my advice. My second tip is to reduce your dependency on the supply chains
that we have here. So essentially reduce your dependency on your local grocery stores,
ordering things on Amazon. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, I talk a lot about
conscious living and I share conscious life hacks and one of the things I feel like is really going
hit us in 2022 is these empty shelves at the stores. And honestly the only way to combat that,
if you will, I'm putting that in air quotes, is to start reducing your own personal consumption,
your family, and that includes your family obviously. But what we have going on in the
world right now is a culture and a society that really likes to consume things and we don't
produce anything. We import everything from overseas. I actually just did a video on some
restrictions that the president is putting on imports from China. If we don't want our own
lifestyle to be impacted, we need to start shifting to something that is going to be more
attainable in a self-sufficient situation. And so that's why I would recommend now starting to just
reduce your dependency on the supply chain. So that might mean going to the grocery store
only once a week or if you already go once a week, stretch it out to every two weeks.
So essentially that is my second tip is reduce your dependency on the supply chains.
And my third tip is setting yourself up for success by learning the things that you need to
learn, gaining additional skills to possibly produce something to raise your own chickens
or grow your own vegetables. But oftentimes the winter for us especially in North America
is a time that we're inside a lot. So get a permaculture certification. That's what I did
last winter. You know, learn how to incubate chicks if that's something that you want to do.
I know that's something I'm adding to my self-sufficient life journey this spring.
If you have extra money around tax time or if you have a child tax credit check or something,
buy a dehydrator, buy a vacuum sealer. Think about those tools that you will need to set
yourself up for success this year in canning and preserving and drying food so that you can store
more things on site. And that might mean getting more jars, adding additional shelving. These are
things that you could do to set up the framework for yourself that as you learn the new skills,
you can fill in those areas in your life of self-sufficiency. So when you learn how to do
seed starting, you have the grow lights, you have the shelving, you know, you have your garden planned
and are set up for success when spring comes. So those are my three tips for becoming more
self-sufficient in 2022. I will also link to the playlist of skills I learned and applied in 2021
and also to Carolyn's video that inspired me to create this video for you today. So I hope that
you have an amazing 2022. Thank you so much for watching. Please let me know in the comments
