WHAT IS WALMART LIKE IN MEXICO
Hi, welcome to our new video, today we are going on a little adventure at Wal-Mart, which
you might see the sign right there, but it's Wal-Mart in Mexico.
We are going to be comparing some of the similarities and differences between the Wal-Marts that you can find in the U.S. and the Wal-Marts that we have here.
That's right, and I think we already have one big difference and it's that in the parking lot, there's these cool awnings over the cars so that all the cars are in a shaded area, which is really, really nice.
Never seen that in the U.S., at least not at Wal-Mart.
No, never. Let's go inside.
The first thing you see when you walk in is a paqueteria at the entrance, and that's where you are supposed to leave the things that you brought in from somewhere else to make sure that there's just not a mix-up or something like that.
That's kind of normal in grocery stores all across Mexico, not just Wal-Mart.
So that's one big difference that we noticed from the U.S.
It's like a little locker, you leave it there, they give you a number, and then you give them that number and they give your stuff back.
So one thing you might notice about grocery stores across Mexico is that typically they have their own coffee shop, coffee bar that you can see behind me right here.
And it's not like a Starbucks or anything, I think it's just their own brand, maybe?
I thought that was pretty interesting to see.
The atmosphere is a lot less sketchy than Wal-Mart's in the U.S.
People aren't obese, people don't look like they're on crack, and it's nice, it's a good feel.
Obviously that's not for Wal-Mart's all across the U.S., it's just been our experience living in the South.
We're in the baby section right now, and as you can see, this looks like a normal Wal-Mart.
You can definitely feel like you're in a Wal-Mart, and we're approaching the toy section.
There's that big ball thing, so that's a very iconic Wal-Mart thing.
When I was a child, I would always take a ball from there and get in trouble for playing with them.
So we recently discovered this thing called Nochi.
Is it Nochi? I call it Nochi.
And we're obsessed with it, it's so good.
So we're going to pick up some more of this.
How much is this?
61 pesos, so like 3 bucks.
Got your Kraft Mac and Cheese.
Campbell's over there.
Cup Noodles.
Fetch-a-Lorio.
Soy-ch-a-Lorio?
Soy-ch-a-Lorio, it might be that one right there that's completely empty.
Oh no, no, no, right here, right here, right here.
Last one.
It's delicious.
I've never had it before to Mexico.
Is it sticky?
It's sticky.
Yeah, that's Wal-Mart for you.
So the health, food, gluten-free, sugar-free, all that sort of stuff section gets one little corner of one little aisle.
One of the things that's true about grocery shopping in Mexico that's not true in the U.S.
is that different grocery stores will have different income level grocery stores.
Wal-Mart is in Mexico, and it's kind of like the middle income level.
For lower income shopping or lower income neighborhoods, they have something called Bodega Herrera,
and for more upper middle level shopping is Superama.
So that's just kind of depending on like what kind of things they offer,
how the quality of their products, and of course, like where they're located.
You know, in more affluent neighborhoods, you'll find Superama,
and then the more like lower income neighborhoods, you'll find Bodega Herrera,
and Wal-Mart, and wherever Wal-Mart fits because Wal-Mart's huge.
So we typically don't shop at Wal-Mart, and that is because... I don't know why.
Well, where we do shop is like in a more centrally located area where there's a whole lot of other things.
Like there's Toyo, where we get, it's a Japanese grocery store beside, like next door, so we can get our tofu there.
Then there's a bulk store right beside that, so like we can do a whole lot of things in one place.
Wal-Marts are usually like in these big parking lot areas, and you can't really do much around it.
They don't carry tofu here, actually. They only carry silken tofu, which is not the same thing.
Wal-Mart, get on board.
I'm not quite sure, but I'm gonna go ahead and go on a limb and say that the bean aisle here is quite a bit bigger than they would be in the U.S.
Lots of bean options here.
It's the whole aisle. It's dry beans on that half, and then all of your like pre-made beans.
Win for a Wal-Mart Mexico right here.
This isn't even all of the beans either. Like we need chickpeas, and they're not on this aisle.
At the Wal-Marts that I'm used to going to in the U.S., there's usually like two whole doors full of Ben and Jerry's.
And here there's only five, six.
One top row.
And no dairy-free Ben and Jerry's.
So Wal-Mart actually isn't very vegan friendly, which kind of sucks. Here, at least.
Yeah, because we noticed that in the U.S. recently, they've been incorporating a lot more vegan items.
I've only seen them like sample things like this in like Sam's Club, which is actually right next door to this Wal-Mart.
But they're actually doing it here.
There's one here, there's one here, there's another lady down there sampling stuff.
Also see how not crazy these people look?
I really enjoy that.
Everyone just looks normal, they're all dressed up, no pajama pants, no...
That's so not a thing here.
The pajama pants?
You have to get dressed up.
Not even dressed up, just like dressed.
Yeah, look presentable.
Like normal people.
Okay, so now we're going to head to the bakery, which is the fun part.
This is premium bread, healthy bread.
Wal-Mart.
Whoa, look at these.
Those are huge.
Yeah, you don't see these in the U.S.
What are they?
They're called conchas.
They're the most traditional Mexican sweet bread that exists.
This is what you were most excited about when you first moved here?
Yeah, I guess it's story time for that.
The first place I went grocery shopping in Mexico was Wal-Mart.
I don't know why, it just happened to be that.
It's familiar.
And I walked in, and the first thing I noticed was the bakery, and they had conchas.
And I was like, whoa, that's so crazy.
I actually put that on my Snapchat story four years ago, you're not going to see it.
Because I just thought it was so insane that Walmart, like the company Walmart,
the same place that I've been going to as a child, had conchas.
Like, that was so weird to me.
Anyway, so it's story time.
They also have bad conchas, and one other thing that we'll show you in a second.
Mmm, look at all these yummy treats.
They look so good.
Yes, the sandwich bread, right?
Oh, look how small some of these are.
We need to pick up some tortillas.
No, no, no, we're getting those at City Market.
Okay, never mind.
I wish you could smell everything in here right now.
Look, they have fresh tortilla chips.
This is, no, no, this isn't tortilla chips.
This is pork rind, we don't talk about that.
Okay, here's the fresh tortilla chips.
Fresh tortillas, look.
And fresh tortillas.
That's a tortilla maker right there.
Okay, so that's something you won't find at Walmart in the U.S., probably.
Whoa, look at all that bread.
The second thing that I noticed when I came to Walmart in Mexico for the first time,
besides the conchas, was this right here.
It's a nopales section.
Nopales, cactus.
They sell cactus at Walmart.
They have a whole little cactus station at Walmart in Mexico.
Obviously way different from the U.S.
They have cotton candy grapes.
You've never tried them before.
No.
I don't think you're supposed to take these out of here, but try it.
She's never had one before.
Come closer.
Tastes like a grape.
Are you serious?
Yeah.
Maybe they have their formula wrong.
Let me try one.
How much are these?
Too much.
Because usually, I swear, I'd pay $10 for one of these from Kroger in the U.S.
Actually, I don't see the price.
The price used to be here.
There's some things that are very familiar about Walmart in Mexico.
It's so good, I want some.
No, we're on the budget.
Guys, please donate to our Patreon because I really want those grapes.
I'm just kidding.
We don't have a Patreon.
I'm kind of kidding.
No, we really don't have one.
But we would like to have one.
So we can't afford those grapes right now because we're on a tight budget.
These videos aren't free.
So if you guys want to buy Tana some grapes, we're going to leave a link in the description for our PayPal.
And you guys can do that for her.
And we will show you on Instagram us buying those grapes if you guys are kind enough to get some for her.
We have no idea how much they cost, so whatever you're willing to give, I guess.
Thanks.
We're in the produce section now, and I mean, it looks like the produce section at Walmart, as you might expect.
There's a lot of people here right now, actually.
I think we're going to continue vlogging for the rest of the day because we don't have that much else to show you here.
So yeah, we've been kind of interested in starting to vlog more.
We're going to see how many people are actually watching through the whole video to see who would be interested in watching our life, I guess.
We're not great at it yet, but we're going to start practicing.
They actually have an aisle here for elderly, pregnant, or...
Disabled people.
Okay, so we're behind the register.
This is a store that sells, like, plastic, like, arty things.
I don't even know what it is.
That's weird that they would have that at Walmart because I feel like it's directly competing against Walmart.
It's like a natural store where you can get your, like, supplements and all sorts of, like, superfoods and all that.
Frozen yogurt right here.
Not much to say there.
Restroom.
Lottery.
Bus ticket.
Cell phone repair.
Water jugs.
Customer service.
ATMs.
And a really weird McDonald's thing that we're going to show you.
This is actually pretty common here in Mexico.
It's, like, just an ice cream McDonald's.
Like, all they sell is ice cream.
Okay, so that was our experience at Walmart.
We're going to keep vlogging now for the rest of the day.
But I do have a little funny story time to tell about the first time that I came to Mexico and Sergio brought me to Walmart.
He was really nervous and he ended up leaving his debit card at the checkout.
So we didn't have any money the entire time that I was here visiting.
What can you say? I wasn't lost.
Still am.
Where are we going now?
We are going, like, right next to this.
There is, like, this mall.
Like, a mall entertainment kind of place where it's not so much about shopping clothing-wise.
It's a lot more, like, they have a Sky Zone.
They have an ice rink.
They have a go-karting place.
They have a movie theater and things like that.
So we're going to go there because I think we're going to get a little bit of food.
Probably fries.
Oh, this is a Porsche store.
Okay, so you want to pick up a Porsche after you get your groceries?
Yeah.
There's a really nice restaurant right here that we're passing.
And there's also a Marriott Hotel, a Petco, Office Depot.
And what else is around here?
Well, I had already mentioned the cool, like, Sky Zone type of places.
Oh, right. There's a Starbucks.
And behind this is a Sam's Club.
And usually where there's a Sam's Club, there will be a Walmart.
So there's one here.
Look how cute this is.
These stores are the cutest.
Comment down below if you recognize it.
These are the softest things.
A Krispy Kreme. A cute boy.
Do you want to go watch Pikachu's Detective Pikachu?
That sounds horrible.
So not a lot will happen over there.
We're heading to Antea where we recorded previously a video about a luxury mall in Mexico.
We're heading over there.
And to get there, we have to cross this highway.
And to cross that highway, we're going to go over this bridge.
Cool.
They have these all over Mexico.
I think they're a little different from the U.S.
I don't recall seeing a lot of them in the U.S.
Yeah, no. I don't think it's common.
Then again, it's not as pedestrian friendly in the U.S. as it is here.
True.
Everybody drives everywhere.
They have another one of these just across the street.
Just another reminder of how cute these are.
And look how soft they look.
You don't even have to touch it to know it's soft.
We're approaching the food court now,
which you might recognize from our luxury mall video that we posted a few weeks ago.
And I think we're heading for Carl's Jr.
Okay, our fries just got here.
I'm so excited to eat these. They look so good.
And they have the best barbecue sauce here, I swear.
And I'm Southern, so I know what I'm talking about.
We are on our way walking towards City Market to get the last few things that we need.
And then we'll be heading home.
And on one of our last vlogs when we were in Mexico City,
I mentioned how I noticed how everybody was just getting white sneakers.
And we walked by this advert.
White sneakers.
This is where we get all of our vegan goodies.
We picked up some purple cabbage, vegan cheese, and vegan butter.
Which are not purchases that we have to make very often, but we do sometimes.
What is this?
Tomatoes.
Oh.
Huh.
They get their own little bin.
Oh, you know what I'm excited for?
What are you excited for?
That gnocchi we got, but we forgot to get pasta sauce.
Oh, we need to get that.
Yeah.
Sergio should definitely be a brand ambassador for Chata Soy Chorizo.
If you live in Mexico, please try this.
And let us know what you think.
A little disclaimer.
Eamon did say that, um, Eamon from American Backstreet said that it made him a little gassy.
So, that's a review from that.
Can't relate.
What is that face for?
I think we can relate a little bit.
All of these breads look so good.
And they even have samples.
It's a little crunchy.
Mm-hmm.
Very crunchy.
Okay, let's go get some Nutella's.
Sergio wants to be bougie and get the blue corn tortillas.
When we're on a budget, we still have to make sure that we're treating ourselves okay.
This is your form of self-care, huh?
Mm-hmm.
Blue corn tortillas.
They have tortillas with nopal, yellow corn tortillas, and more yellow corn tortillas.
Uh-oh.
They don't have any?
Aww.
Well, the normal ones are still very good.
These are all still fresh.
Cha-ching!
So, that's yellow corn tortillas.
Because, in case you don't know, um, there are a lot, a lot of types of corn.
Corn here in Mexico is, like, the staple of, like, the cuisine here.
So, now the people that are bringing back the authentic Mexican food, um, even prehistoric Mexican food,
they are, like, playing with different types of corn because each one of them has its own particular flavor.
And I think it's really neat.
But, yeah, it just shows, like, how diverse Mexican cuisine actually can be.
Especially, like, on the higher end of the spectrum.
Gelato?
Let's go get some gelato.
We're getting this one, which is soy cacao.
It's literally the best gelato I've ever had.
Give me some...
Iced americano?
Yeah.
Cavalso's grocery store has a cafe that's this cute.
Like, are you kidding me?
The grocery store is back here.
Check out this amazing wall behind us of all the coffee bean options.
And I can't think of a better place to leave you guys for this vlog.
The purpose of this video was to show you guys the differences between Walmart in the U.S. and Mexico.
But we got the ball rolling with the vlogging and we were feeling good,
so we wanted to show you guys what the rest of our outing was going to be like.
But this is basically it.
We're just going to have our gelato and a little iced coffee and go home.
And yeah, so let us know what you think of this different kind of vloggy video.
If it's too boring, if you like it.
The more we do this, the more comfortable we'll get in front of the camera
and the more of our actual personalities that we can give you guys.
Because I feel like we haven't been able to be totally ourselves yet because it's kind of weird.
I'm so shy.
Yeah.
Montana's especially shy.
But for anybody, it's weird to put the camera in front of your face and record and put it online.
And people watch you and people not always be super nice about their comments and things.
So it's weird to do this kind of thing.
But we love doing it and we love showing you guys what our life is in Mexico.
Also, I wanted to say that the reason that we make these videos,
especially the Mexico videos like the one from today,
is we want to show what life can be like in Mexico.
We're not necessarily traveling or anything.
We're not visiting Mexico.
We live here.
So we want to show you guys what life is like.
You know, not like first impressions or anything like that,
but what life is really like in Mexico.
So I hope you guys like our videos.
I hope you like this video.
And if you did, please give it a like because it helps us grow.
And subscribe if you haven't already.
And we will see you in the next one.
Bye.
Bye-bye.
