Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
Come show me what you found buddy. What is it?
Nice work man. What's on your head? What are you wearing? What is it?
He is a good boy isn't he? Hold on tight.
Good morning everybody. We are up at our bascala permit. If you've been watching the videos you
know we got them into this private land right in the middle of all the Forest Service ground
and today we're going to be hauling them out. So we're going to get them in this corrals.
Right here the trucks are going to be coming they said after 8 or 9 which we don't know
what that really means. Might mean 10, 30, 11. Yeah it might for sure but my sister's here,
Sammy and all her little kids. We got Paisley and Red on the horse
and Easton just found an antler. Is that your first antler buddy? Yeah. Yeah.
And babe how are you feeling? What's your tummy? Tired. Tired? Yeah. Only about a month left.
Tired and round. And the baby will be here soon. You don't look that round. Well it's
kind of hiding under three coats. That's okay. But yeah we're gonna get started here really
soon. Get the horses and go. Get the cows in the corrals. Come on girls. Over to the other draw.
Let's go. Come on. Come on. Come on let's go. Come on. We're getting this group of cows out
here today and then we're getting our Rochford permit cows out on Saturday. Supposed to be snow
coming on Monday. So it'd be nice if we got everything out here before the snow came.
It's a beautiful day though. Come on. But it is time. We could use some snow. We need the
moisture for next year. So once the cows are out here let it snow. Let it come down. Come on.
Come on. Turn around. Let's go. Come on. Hey. Come on. Up in the corner. Let's go.
Turn around Red. Come on. Come on. Come on. Follow them over there. Let's go. Come on cows.
There we go. Come on calves. Not too bad so far.
He's trying to sort all the Reds out of here which are the neighbors.
Come on little Red calf. Come on. There we go. A handful of neighbor's cows
and our cows. The trucks are just showing up. It's about 10 30.
That'll leave the bug an extra. That'll leave you a buck ten.
That'll leave freaking John. We take 106. That'll leave John freaking
48. Yeah.
Hey. Turn around. Yeah. Come on.
Come on. Come on cows.
Let's go.
There you go. There you go.
Come on in there. Let's go. Come on honey.
Come on cow. Get out of there cow. Come on calves. Come on girls. Get in there. Let's go.
There you go. There you go. Come on. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Oh stupid thing.
Calves.
Hey. Come on. Last one. Come on. Get in there. Let's go.
What do you think Easton? What's under there?
I don't see it though. It's way on the other side.
Go the other way. Point the other way. There you go.
Good job. That's a pretty fun toy.
Well that took a little longer than that. Go get them unloaded.
So we put all the cows on three semis and they took them over to what we call the Armstrong
place which are just some corrals and some pastures down here outside of the hills
and then we loaded up one semi with all calves and then one of our pickups and trailers with
calves so we're going to bring all the calves actually over to the feedlot and we're just
going to wean them now so we'll be taking the calves off the moms they won't be doing anything
with each other anymore but since we're doing that we got to give a couple vaccines right now
too because this when you wean them it's a pretty vulnerable time for the calves they can get sick
really easily just because it's a lot of stress some people precondition where they'll get all
their calves in give them a round of vaccines and then kick them back out with their moms
and that's a little less stressful on the calf we don't precondition because we're up in the hills
if we had to round everything up give our calves vaccines turn everything back out for another
couple weeks and then round up again like you guys saw rounding up once is pretty inefficient
doing it twice like that wouldn't wouldn't make any sense at all so we don't precondition
for that reason um and i we don't really have many more sick calves because we don't precondition
it works just fine but yeah we're gonna run over to the feedlot the semi's over there now
we just got back we're behind them a little ways so he's probably getting all unloaded and we'll
get over there start working the calves there's only 150 of them so it won't take us very long
to run them through and give them their vaccines
my calf get out of there get out come on yeah come on come on get out
i'm gonna give some shots mom maybe so we're giving two different vaccines today one is a
five-way vaccine that covers five different respiratory diseases such as like bbd rsv
and then the other is a seven-way black leg so it covers like black leg overeating and some other
diseases that cause sudden death um and it also has homophilus in it so those are what we have
biggest problems with
come on cat hey get in there okay
to blaze a trail through the kosher i know we got a lot of weeds in our facility
i'll do the pregnant lady's thing
that's true what's this pregnant lady thing
houston that's a pretty fitting toy for the day
yeah maybe not play with the needle tell him again
come on cows go go cows
come on get out of here
can you do the pregnant lady dance
hi
paisley do you like working cows are you going to be a cow girl go chase them
good job paisley you're helping him he really needs your help good work thank you
that's it that's it wow
say we're all done
what are we all done with vaccinating calves yeah say we're all done vaccinating calves
and you did all the hard work didn't you

oh down below
careful with this around the highway along the highway oh that's the one that jack and i had
trouble is that that's the last one in there isn't it should be maybe there's a couple cows
i can't be this oh that's oh yeah
our neighbors called they might have one of our bulls
it's still going or maybe it'll make the cow crazy yeah and maybe one of our cows
we have a red one of ours a red one of ours yep so then we're only short 15 total right

i want to say paisley did a great job today she is really good she's a natural cow girl
she knows what to do and she controlled the flag really good
i think paisley did a wonderful job riding buck and i'm really glad that i have a little girl
and her brothers to give my favorite horse to
uh
i already said something here
good job paisley
all right are we done
got the calves work jock's jumping in the tractor we're gonna put them in this first
pen at the feedlot and give them some third cutting alfalfa bales which should give them
a nice little nutrient boost they aren't used to eating hay yet so that's why we feed them
in the feeders and not at the bunks right away so we'll do that real quick set the feeders around
and hopefully we have some happy calves
yeah they look like it
all right cavies get out of here i hope you all stay healthy
come on
come on said they might be able to make tomorrow work to get our cows out of rochford
otherwise it'll be saturday tomorrow being friday so we still don't really know but we'll
make our plan as they let us know later tonight but we're supposed to get some snow on monday
supposed to be like a foot of snow up there some rain and snow down here which we really need the
moisture it's kind of hard on the calves just being weaned with wet conditions that can be
kind of tough on them but you know we need the moisture too so it's we want it to we want it to
snow for that reason and rain but we also don't want it to for the health of the calves but either
way we'll just deal with it but yeah thank you guys for coming along really appreciate it we'll
see you very soon till next time take care
