A saying from the 1600s says that you shouldn't sell the skin of a bear before you catch it.
So, a market where the value of securities or commodities keeps going down is called
a bear market, which is what US stocks are going through right now.
One of the reasons why people on Wall Street today call someone who sells a stock expecting
its price to go down a bear, is because of this story.
A bull market, on the other hand, is when assets always go up over time.
Here are the top 5 mistakes that people make when the market is down.
Have you ever made any of your own?
Bear markets in cryptocurrencies can be very bad for people who don't have much or any
experience investing.
Compared to regular stock markets, the swings in cryptocurrency markets are often much bigger,
and it's not unusual for some coins to lose 90% or more of their value from their highest
point.
Investors may make a lot of mistakes if they don't understand a bear market in cryptocurrencies
or don't know what it is.
Because of this, learning from people who have been through cycles before and figuring
out what the mistakes are could save you money and heartache.
Here are the most common mistakes that traders and investors in cryptocurrencies make during
a bear market, along with tips on how to avoid them.
Selling panic.
It's always bad to sell panic.
This is because panic, which is a response to a real threat, causes strong feelings of
both fear and anxiety.
When this happens, we tend to lose control and make quick decisions that go against logic
and common sense.
Panic selling, is a term used in trading and investing to describe when a lot of cryptocurrencies
are sold off because of fear, rumors, or, more generally, an overreaction instead of
careful and well-planned analysis.
Investing in cryptocurrencies should be based on logic and facts, not on how you feel about
them.
For example, Bitcoin is often called, digital gold, which is a type of asset that usually
goes up in value over time.
Many people invest in it to keep the buying power of their money the same, especially
during times of high inflation when fiat currencies tend to lose value more quickly.
If this is the main reason for the investment, most people will want to keep it for a long
time.
The only reason to sell would be if the story changed fundamentally and Bitcoin was no longer
useful.
But in reality, when the price of Bitcoin starts to go down, a lot of people start selling
their Bitcoins on the open market.
They don't see, or don't want to admit, that, at least at the time this was written, most
people also see BTC as a risky asset.
So, investors can sell Bitcoin before they sell other assets they think are safer when
the economy is in trouble.
Because of this, the price goes down, sometimes more quickly.
During these violent drops, many investors worry.
Even though this is fine, it is probably the most common mistake.
Remember that the value of no asset goes up in a straight line.
On the way, there will be bumps.
This is how the Bitcoin chart looks for the last 10 years.
Yes, Bitcoin is much more volatile than, say, the S&P 500, but its price has also gone up
in the past.
Even though the corrections are big, it's important to remember why the investment was
made in the first place.
The wetting of bags.
Even though you shouldn't sell when you're scared, that doesn't mean you should never
sell.
Just as important is letting go of your pride and admitting that your investment was a mistake.
Many people get married to their bags, which means they form an emotional bond with the
purchase and don't care about logic or reason when it doesn't make sense.
In 2017 and 2018, when the ICO craze was at its peak, this happened to a lot of people.
Early on, a lot of investors made a lot of money, but many of them couldn't cash out
because they were looking for an even better return on investment.
Later, when the value of their cryptocurrencies started to go down, they didn't sell because
they thought they would go back up.
Many altcoins that have lost more than 90% of their value since ATH are not likely to
ever get back to where they were.
Don't be afraid to leave a bad situation behind and try again.
Overtrading.
This also has a lot to do with how badly people handle their feelings.
Overtrading is often caused by several things, such as regret over misreading an investment
thesis, disappointment over missing an opportunity, a strong desire to make up for past losses,
and so on.
All of these things cause people to make decisions based on how they feel.
The charts are just a visual way to show information, and it's up to you to figure out what this
information means.
Remember that the market doesn't care what you think or how you feel.
But this is a process that is always based only on facts and where feelings have no place
to grow.
Also, when you enter and leave deals, you have to pay extra trading costs, which can
add up quickly if you don't keep track of them.
Trying to guess where the bottom will be.
Beginners also often make the mistake of trying to time the bottom.
An old saying goes, BTC still has room to go down, so I'll buy then.
Next, one of two things could happen.
Even though the price of Bitcoin goes down, people don't buy it because they think it
will go down even more.
They don't buy Bitcoin because they think it will take one last leg down, at some point,
even though its value never goes down.
But consider this.
Imagine that Bitcoin is currently trading at $10,000 and you think that a 20% drop will
bring it down to $8,000.
If you don't buy Bitcoin, it goes on a parabolic bull run that takes it to $100,000.
Now think about whether that 20% were worth it.
During the COVID meltdown in March 2020, when BTC fell below $4,000 and the world was on
the verge of an economic disaster because of global lockdowns and an impending epidemic,
many people thought that the worst was yet to come.
But that didn't happen.
Instead, BTC went on a wild bull run and reached $69,000 a year later.
No one can say what will happen next on the market.
All predictions are just educated guesses.
So, if you are not an experienced trader, the dollar cost average is one of the best
tools you can use, DCA.
Better still if you do a DCA on the way down.
The idea is to break up the total amount of money you want to invest into smaller amounts
that you then invest regularly, like once every two weeks or once a month.
By getting the average price of all the bids, the risk will go down.
Network of Bitcoin.
Mental health is not being taken into account.
From what has been said so far, one thing should be clear.
Your mental health comes first.
No amount of money could buy your health.
It's important to talk about this because more and more people are trading and investing
in cryptocurrencies now that they have mostly reached the mainstream.
Pay attention to your mental health and don't ignore it.
If you think that cryptocurrencies are here to stay, one of the least stressful things
you can do is invest for the long term.
Why worry about Bitcoin's price going up or down by 10% right now if you think it will
eventually replace gold?
People think of Bitcoin as digital gold.
Does it matter if you bought Ethereum for $1,000 or $1,100 if you think it will become
a global platform used by hundreds of thousands of developers and users around the world?
During bear markets, prices tend to drop to their lowest levels, and it's common for people
to see their paper gains shrink.
If so, remember that there is more to life than cryptocurrencies.
Losing money that could change your life hurts, but remember that nothing is more important
than your health.
These are some mistakes that people often make when the market is going down.
None of the things listed above is financial advice.
This work only wants to make people laugh and teach them something.
Investing in cryptocurrency comes with a big chance of losing money.
Your entire investment could be lost.
So, you shouldn't ever put more money at risk than you can afford to lose.
