After decades of developing and sharing data on the risks that natural hazards pose, FEMA Region 8 chose an exciting new path using the power of the arts to educate communities about the risks posed by natural disasters. Born in 2019, Artworks seeks to raise awareness and start a dialogue about how individuals and communities can better protect themselves from natural disasters. Artworks taps into the local creative community to develop projects that will resonate with people.

Completed in 2021, “Community Forms” is FEMA ArtWorks’ first installation. Community Forms is a sculptural installation in Denver, Colorado designed by Colorado artist Matt Barton, serving as a drainage system, art installation and skatepark. Located in Denver’s River North neighborhood by the South Platte River, Community Forms features abstract curvilinear forms that provide a social space for gathering and creative play while also channeling stormwater through the site.

The artwork merges drainage and water quality with recreational and social spaces and invites all ages to play, linger and explore mitigation concepts.
