Hermann Levi (1839-1900) was noticed early on in his hometown of Giessen for his musical talent. After studying music, he first worked as a bandmaster. In his early years, however, he also composed a great deal, especially songs, of which baritone René Perler and Edward Rushton at the piano have put together an illuminating selection. The songs are combined with works by Robert Schumann and songs by the Austrian composer Hermann von Herzogenburg, who is best known for his commitment to Bach's cantata works. Mélodies by Duparc and songs by Johanns Brahms complete the program. #ClassicalMusic
