Crowds could be seen on a Northern California beach cheering on their favorite canines in the annual World Dog Surfing Championship. In all three weight classes, the competition was “ruff” but regardless of the outcome, everyone was in for plenty of treats throughout the day.

Hundreds of dog fans and dozens of dogs gathered on Pacifica State Beach in Pacifica, California on Saturday for the World Dog Surfing Championships. Dogs competed in categories according to size in small, medium, and large to very large groups. The canines also competed in tandem dogs as well as tandem human dogs with their owners on board. Jeffrey Niebuhr drove up from San Diego with his seven-and-a-half-year-old Lab Charlie, who started surfing at age two. Charlie won second place in the large to very large dog group. Boy, you know, Charlie, I can't even explain his passion for it and how much he enjoys it. He has such a good time. Even when we're not surfing competitively, if we just go to the beach and we're hanging out and he takes the surfboard to the water and he'll bark on the waves and people just love it. And we just like to keep it positive, have a good time, make people happy, and we just really have a great time. James Wall brought his dog Faith, a 10-year-old rescue dog, up for the competition and took first place in the large to very large dog category. Oh, it's an awesome bonding experience. She was found in the parking garage, so she was scared of a lot of stuff as a puppy. And we just started going to the beach. She jumped on one of the surfboards and I was like, yeah, let's give it a try. Let's see what happens. And she hasn't looked back since. Dogs are judged on multiple factors, including the length of the ride, technique, confidence, and size or strength of the wave. The small dog group includes dogs from one to 20 pounds. The medium group includes 21 to 40 pounds. And the large to very large dog group includes furry friends 41 pounds and higher. Yeah, these dogs have regularly, you know, been in the competition and near the top, so they've been doing it a long time. So we planned on winning something and we did. I think it was amazing to see so many dogs come together and like to surf. This is the first time I've seen dogs surf, so it was really good. And I hope my dog would be inspired by that. Each year, people can sponsor a canine contestant or team, and a portion of those proceeds go to dog, surfing, and environmental-related charities. Jason Blair, NTD News, California.
