San Francisco's underground ships? Are ships buried below parts of San Francisco's financial district? Joseph Amster aka "Emperor Norton" explains why! It turns out over 40 ships are buried beneath the Embarcadero and Financial District. Often abandoned after bringing over one-way Gold Rush fortune seekers. The ships we left in the bay pulled up on land and used as buildings, saloons and hotels. Eventually the thy were buried and land was filled in and they were forgotten.
One of the most famous Emperor Norton shows us is the location of the Niantic at the corner of Clay and Sansone St. The abandoned ship became a saloon and hotel until it went up in a fire. The stern of the Niantic is on display at the Maritime Museum located in the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. For more information:
