Shenzhen: 79-storey skyscraper shakes; 15,000 people evacuated in emergency
From 12:31 to 1:00pm on May 18th, the 79-story skyscraper - SEG Plaza in Shenzhen, China experienced a shaking phenomenon. The building management quickly called for an emergency evacuation, and by 1:55, all 15,000 people in the building had been safely evacuated. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
“The SEG Plaza building shakes” and other related topics quickly rose to the top of the hot search list, and social media platforms quickly spread video clips taken by the netizens at the scene of the incident.
Located in Futian District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, the 356-meter-tall SEG Building is the third tallest building in Shenzhen, as well as the tallest steel pipe and concrete structure in the world.
Shenzhen SEG Plaza was invested by Shenzhen SEG Group and designed by the famous mainland architect Chen Shimin, who was awarded the "Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award" in 2001. According to Chinese media, the design uses highly technical steel pipe and concrete structure and was the first type of advanced technology adopted in China at that time. The use of this new technique makes the building's columns become slimmer, which saves ground space.
Mainland media reported that the SEG Plaza Building is now completely closed and experts have entered the building for testing.
According to official sources, the preliminary judgment states that the building shaking is caused by its own building structure.
For saying that the shaking was caused by strong winds, the official Weibo response of the Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau said, "from 1-2pm, Huaqiangbei Street SEG Plaza station measured a maximum instantaneous wind speed of level 5, and can’t be categorized as strong wind."
The General Rules for Civil Building Design (JGJ37-1987) released by China require that the durability of general buildings be 50 to 100 years.
In the afternoon of May 5th, 2020, the Humen Bridge in Guangdong Province experienced unusual shaking.
In fact, there are many buildings in China that had quality problems during the construction process.
On March 29th, 2010, Qiu Baoxing, then vice minister of China's Ministry of Housing and Construction, said at the 6th International Conference on Green Building and Building Energy Efficiency that "China is the country with the largest amount of new construction each year, yet it only lasts 25-30 years."
According to statistics, China is the world’s largest builder of new construction each year, with 2 billion square meters of new construction annually, equivalent to consuming 40% of the world's cement and steel. The building life, on the other hand, only lasts 25 to 30 years. The average life span of buildings in the UK reaches 132 years, while the life span of buildings in the US reaches 74 years.
Industry analysts believe that factors such as design, construction personnel, and building materials are the causes of the short service life for Chinese buildings.
