I spent 80k Chase points on 3 nights at the W Hotel in Taipei, here is the review.
Hey guys, Credit Shifu here. Today we are going to review the W Hotel in Taipei.
I booked this hotel using the sign-up bonus on the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
The wonderful room costs $400 per night which translates to 40,000 Chase points,
but then with the reserve card you get 50% extra value, so I got three nights
which would have been 120,000 points for 80,000. When I checked in I got a complimentary room
upgrade because of my Preferred Guest Plus status from the American Express SPG credit card.
They upgraded me to a fabulous room, so let's check it out.
The fabulous rooms are on higher floors and have a great view.
The room has electric window blinds which I really love, this little mini bar,
this cupboard with loads of overpriced stuff that you absolutely should not buy,
you just get it from 7-Eleven, a nice selection of teas and coffees,
and they've put a lot of water all over the room. I guess they designed the experience with people
who are partying in mind you need a lot of water to nurse your hangover.
You get this white noise machine which is really soothing to listen to,
also a hangover cure, you also get this other bed by the window which I assume a child could sleep
on, you get this red animal sculpture which is actually advertised as one of the special
things about this room. To be honest I don't think it really adds much, I really wouldn't
miss it if it wasn't here. Let's now check out the bathroom. These doors open up to create an
open bathroom. The bath is a feature of the Fabulous room, in the Wonderful room you only
get a shower. The toilet is one of those Japanese ones that opens up automatically, cleans your butt,
etc. The entrance to the bathroom has this floor-to-ceiling lantern and you get these
robes which are really comfy too. The pool was situated directly below our room and it was a
really great pool, but since it's outside and we were there in winter I actually spent more time
in the hot tub and steam room. The breakfast was pretty good in terms of quality, both western and
asian options were available, although there wasn't the sheer quantity of selection that I
experienced at the Sheraton. And listen to the music, would you want to listen to that pounding
dance music if you've just gone out of bed? No, me neither, and that brings me to a few criticisms of
the W. The hotel feels like a nightclub, I get it, that's their style, but sometimes you want to relax
and all that dance music and flashing lights in the common areas does get a bit annoying. I really
don't like this elevator, it just like makes me feel sick, it's kind of like being forced to be
inside a nightclub and you know I don't drink but if you got home kind of like drunk and you got in
here you would probably be like totally spaced out and might want to throw up and be sick because of
it, so really not good. You have no choice, this is the only way up, so yeah. I also felt that although
the room is luxurious it has a few cheap tacky looking things mixed in there. One was this rabbit,
the other was this drawer in the bathroom. So one of the things about the W hotel that's kind of weird
to me is that you've got this sort of like real nice luxury feel with this basin and this
freestanding bath, all this nice sort of stone here, wooden stool, very classy and sort of classical,
and then you got this hideous fluorescent thing here, you know, which like I feel that this
has no place next to this, you know. Maybe I'm sort of into this more sort of classic luxury
feel but I just don't think this and this should be anywhere near each other. Lastly there are
things in your room that are for sale and have price labels on them that you should never buy,
like everything in this cupboard for instance, and this Fiji water, 260 Taiwan dollars. In US dollars
that's 8.45. To show you how crazy that price is, at Walmart you can get six bottles of the stuff for
a cheaper price than one bottle of the W. I'm guessing they're counting on you drinking it when
you're drunk maybe. But despite those few criticisms, this was still my favourite hotel I stayed at
while I was in Taiwan. The room was fun and didn't take itself too seriously, the bed was comfy and
the view was amazing, especially at night. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone. It's
also in a great location if you want to be near Taipei 101. So guys let me know what you think,
have you stayed at the W? How do you like it? Leave your comments below. Next week I will bring
you my last video from my Taiwan trip, a review of Ever Air's lounge at Taipei Taoyuan Airport.
