Two hosts compete in a \"whiskey hunt\" challenge, each spending a $100 budget to find the best bottles. Through a blind tasting of four different samples, they evaluate the profiles of various ryes and bourbons to determine which selection offers the best value and quality.
A hundred bucks.
That's it. A hundred bucks.
Yep. Enough to buy one really good bottle of bourbon.
You can buy one or you can buy two.
We got the same budget today and we're going hunting.
No coordinating, no giving each other advice.
You can't ask me any questions.
Okay, fine.
We're just going to build the best group of bottles.
We can for under $100.
You can't go over.
Not a penny over.
And then when we get back, we're going to find out who spent their money the best.
Before we head out, here are the rules.
Oh, rules.
Yes.
We're each going to have $100.
We can buy any whiskey we want.
Anything.
As long as you stay under $100.
Okay.
Gotcha.
Not 101.
We're going to put all of them in the blind.
Winner takes all.
Yes.
There's no helping each other.
Okay.
I'm going to film when you're picking out your bottles.
You're going to film me when I'm picking out mine, but we are not going to give each
other advice.
You're just going to loosely observe what each other is picking.
We don't pick the same thing.
I am not going to help you shop.
Well, after we go shopping, we'll bring everything back here, taste it blind and
find out who is the better shopper.
Whoever spends the money better.
Arthur, go grab your purse.
Oh gosh.
Let's go hunting.
All right, let's go.
We're in town and country, a little suburb outside of St.
Louis, and I brought Arthur to the wine and cheese place.
Wine and cheese.
Really?
I'm here for bourbon.
No cheese.
We're going to go inside, see what they got, and hopefully mine come out on top.
I think I'm going to win today.
Guaranteed.
I don't speak French.
This is not what I'm looking for here.
I found bourbon.
Bourbon, rye whiskey, single malts, all in play today.
I'm going to go for variety.
I want something that really gets the tasting buds of Scott.
Lots of bourbon, bourbon, bourbon, bourbon, bourbon.
Oh, we have a McJer's rye, $45.99.
We have the kind of standard Southern rye from 13th Colony.
We also have Castering.
Here on the top shelf, we have the Jack Daniels whole lineup, Jim Beam, Jack
Daniels, regular straight rye whiskey, which I don't think they make anymore.
Sagmore rye.
Reserve series, $58.99.
We have the small batch, this is their kind of OG signature, $40.
Castering, $60.
And then this one, $60, double oak.
It's a little lower proof, but I think the extra flavor in there, extra oak is
going to, it's going to be a good one.
Let's look at this guy.
This would win, $90.
I would only get one bottle.
What bourbon is less than $10?
Not going to be able to get it.
Nothing.
Here's, this was a good one too.
Russell's single barrel rye, $72.
You got to get two bottles.
So I'm going to go.
Yeah.
I'm, I think I'm, I'm going to do, I'm going to do this one, $60.
I have $40 left.
Hello world.
I wouldn't say that's your most exotic flavorful rye.
Rittenhouse, $31.
I mean, they're good, but I don't think it's good enough for a blind winner.
Let's keep moving.
Trying to find something in the 50 to $60 range.
That's the real challenge here.
Cause I got to get, I got to save enough room for another great bottle.
So big fan of the hard truth.
I'm looking at this, the sweet mash weeded bourbon.
Uh, this is a hundred proof.
It's a bottle and bond and it's $55.
So it leaves me plenty, $45 to work with.
So let's go down this way.
Buckner's 13.
Is that in the budget for today?
I don't know.
How much is that?
Uh, two 24.
Yeah.
Yes.
The new, uh, double oak from holiday, the seven 50.
I think I found a winner.
Silver Springs, sweet ride, $44.
These are single barrels.
So it's always a little bit of a risk, but, um, the single barrels I've had
with this have all been spectacular pound for pound.
This is going to line up pretty well with the sag more double oak.
Got a whole wall whiskey, whiskey wall, 40 bucks for is like a tough price point.
It's like 30 of $30 bourbon.
Then you have $50 bourbon.
40 is like doesn't exist at the Rowan's Creek.
It's 44 too much by $3.
We have a old forest over 27, one more pass here.
Uh, Johnny drum.
Have y'all had this?
Uh, about three years ago, I went into a store and they told me
this is going to be allocated one day.
I don't think it's ever been allocated, but it's 40 bucks.
Actually.
I'm going to take this home.
This is at your winter.
This is it right here.
Your winners.
Okay.
We're going to win this thing.
I think we have a winner.
I think we have two winners.
Nah, let's go check out.
Oh yeah.
That's a great store.
So if you're ever in a town and country in St.
Louis area, Missouri, check out wine and cheese.
They have more than wine and cheese.
We're back.
We are back in the studio.
We went shopping and we got some bourbon.
We also poured them in glasses and mixed them up.
I'm excited.
We don't know what's in what glass before we taste these though.
Quick word from today's sponsor.
Oh yeah.
Hartley bourbon.
It's very convenient timing.
Thank you.
Reviews, scores, bottle stats, bottle buying guides, basically all the
homework we wish we had when we were actually shopping today.
Why didn't we look at our notes?
What the heck are we thinking how we would have been cheating?
Probably.
That's why probably for this episode would have been considered cheating.
Yeah.
But for you, go use it.
Yeah.
Artfullybourbon.com.
Yes.
All right.
We know what we bought.
We don't know what's in each glass, but I'm ready to, ready to find out.
Okay.
We are going to start on your left, our right, A, B, C, D.
That's it.
Are you ready?
Yes.
To the notes.
Glass A.
Boy nose.
That's nice.
I bet this is my day.
Very caramel forward.
Little baking spice.
Not too proofy.
No.
Hmm.
Maybe a more like, like rye spice.
Hmm.
Is it rye?
Little.
It's rye.
I'm keeping a little rye on the nose.
Not a lot of like oak, not really an oak.
Bourbon.
It's not bad.
Um, we had a small amount, a small amount.
Yeah, I was gonna, I was gonna go through and just sniff.
Oh, damn.
What the heck?
What is that?
What?
That was fantastic.
That's oaky and, and all it's like a double oak or something.
It's beautiful.
Very toasty.
I like this as well.
That, I hope the palace is good.
It's the notes.
Oh yeah.
More of that.
A little different.
It's still got a lot of character to it.
This is a little rye.
Rye spice.
A little bit, but not, not like this one is.
It has a little dill.
Just a touch of dill.
Dill.
Grass.
Like, uh, yes.
Like plants.
Yeah.
Little.
Just.
And little orange.
Light lightness, but it's, it's very complex.
Very nice.
What?
That's like graham cracker.
Okay.
These are very different.
That's nice.
Like the, all four of these are very different.
It's just like a, I don't know.
Maybe, uh, I know it's not a thing like a graham cracker cookie or something like
that.
It's super unique.
Well, whatever this is, it's, it's got a, it's got a nice nose.
It's like, it's, it's different.
It's got sugar cookie.
Love it.
Sure.
Very nice.
Okay.
Classy.
There we go.
Cheers.
Here's y'all.
It's like multi.
Almost tastes like a, uh, this tastes a little more like cookies.
Yeah.
It's, it's multi very something like pastry.
Yeah.
That that's really kind of, that's the dominant note to me.
It's kind of bready.
It's a little malt.
You said multi.
I think that's right in that name.
It's a week kind of reminds me of an old elk, but like I get that like multi, like
extra, like cookie, really heavy cookie pastry kind of vibe from old elk.
Could it be better in certain areas?
Yes.
But I liked it.
It was enjoyable.
It's very enjoyable.
I like that.
Okay.
I'm moving on to this.
I want to know what the heck this tastes like.
Cheers.
It's darker.
Oh yeah.
Oh, presence.
Beautiful.
It's like very sweet up front.
And then it's like this rhino.
This, this tastes the right, the right spice, but I don't get any like the
mint or pine tree, that type of right.
It's like leather and like old.
Oh, it's, it's very nice.
I like it.
I get a little bit more of those traditional.
Right.
No, I do get some of the pine.
Yeah.
I do get the mint, the pine at the same time.
It does have some of the notes that you mentioned too.
I just kind of get a little bit of everything.
It's almost like a sweet bourbon up front and then it goes, it shifts.
Yeah.
It's very, very good.
That's tasty.
Both of these first two A and B are excellent so far.
Oh, God, that's that.
Oh, I feel like that's a ride too.
I'm dead.
These two are very similar.
Very, very similar.
I see.
Okay.
What you said about this one, that's what I'm getting here.
What's that?
I'm not, not getting a lot of rice spice on this one.
I think this one was sweeter though.
Like it might've been, but this was more traditional ride forward.
This one was more bourbon forward to me.
More bourbon forward.
I mean, I think, yeah, I just think B was more sweet overall.
Like it was like sugary, vanilla, caramel up front, which this one's has
probably some of those notes, but it's, it's more balanced, I think.
Very good.
That one's like toasty too.
Like wood, burnt wood.
Very sweet.
Caramel.
Just lovely.
Lovely.
Marshmallow.
Beautiful Marshmallow.
Yeah.
It's, it's got that just beautiful toasted presence.
You mean, that is a delicious sport.
Yes.
All right.
Class D.
Go again.
Cheers.
Oh, cheers.
Dang.
That's good.
Ready?
Honey.
A nice mouthfeel.
It's rich.
It tastes more like traditional bourbon to me, but it's like really, it's, it's
rich.
I like that rich.
It is like, wow.
Very beautiful profiles.
Covers a lot of ground in that one little sip.
It's a little fruity.
I can sip that one.
I'm getting a little musty, little musty note, like a, a wet shoe.
I'd kind of like it, but you know, like, uh, you like what
you, how do you know what that tastes like?
No, I mean, on the note, it's not, it's on the note.
If you got like a nice legs to soggy leather boot.
Great.
Well, you can tell it's, it's got a great mouthfeel.
It's yeah.
I like this one.
Look at them legs.
All right.
Oh gosh.
Now it comes to the ranking.
Okay.
Um, let's power through these one more time.
Let's get our final rankings.
We're not going to take very long, but we will.
I'll speed it up anyway.
Okay.
Are you ready?
Go.
So, uh, last place I'm going to go with a was my last place.
Kind of gave me a weeded vibes.
Don't know if it's weeded, but could be totally wrong.
But that's where my head was.
That's going to be for a third place all the way down here.
This one is going to be, uh, also good.
I feel like it was a strong bourbon, very good flavors.
Uh, third place today, my first two top two places.
These two are really good.
I think I want to say these are both rocks.
This one came across a little sweeter.
This one came across a little more oaky and like toasted notes.
I think to your point, I did get a little more of the ride, which
I think is going to give it the win.
So I'm going to go to, um, a little more subtle rye bourbon notes on this
one, a little more pronounced, uh, sweetness on the, on the front of
the pallet, but rye heavy on the, on the finish, I like a strong finish.
Give me a strong finish.
So I'm going to go one is glass beat.
Yeah, I I'm, I'm right there.
So fourth place is going to be a I'm with you.
It was kind of one kind of leaned a little bit into that bready kind of vibe.
The proof wasn't really noticeable, but it was, it was tasty.
Next up is going to be this.
Now, now this had a similar nose and the nose is very bready on this too, but I,
the pallet really opened up some extra flavors for me, just some more
sweetness, rich, like honey along with that bread, it was really nice.
A little bit better than, than a.
So D is going to get third.
Then it comes down to the two.
What I think are, were the clear favorites for me.
I think there was a great amount of separation.
These both offered a ton of lots of flavor.
And depending on what kind of whiskey that you lean into bourbon, rye, sweet
versus a minty or grassy, that really determines which one you're going to
pick, but they are both very, very good, very strong pours, but I am flipped on.
From your order.
I am going to go second place is going to be, be a little bit too traditional.
Rye, very nice, very complex, but a little bit too much of that.
This baby was, was, was fantastic, but it is.
It did to me drink a little bit more like a, a high rye bourbon, but I
do think it's a rye.
All right.
Well, I I'm sticking with that.
I still like B.
You picked C.
All right.
Let's moment of truth.
He's ready for these things.
Let's start with our clear last place.
Now it's going to be class A.
All right, here we go.
There's not weeded.
I don't think that's not weeded.
Not weeded.
Rich and mellow.
It says right here on the label.
I would agree with that.
It is a sour mash.
I think you'd probably find these for 30, 35.
This is, this is very, it's crushable.
Very easy drinking.
Yeah.
Number four.
It's a good one.
All right.
Um, we're today, we're moving on to a third place.
Now this is a unanimous.
We both picked this letter D.
Uh, we're right.
So the weeder is D.
That's very, like, that is a rich, full wheat.
I've never actually had this.
This is the first time.
So it's, it's a good experience.
It's solid.
That's what hard truth is.
It's just very, very solid.
I feel like we know them by their rye.
Rye is good.
Now they're weeded.
Yeah.
I'm, I'm a fan.
Yeah.
This bottle was actually my more expensive bottle.
55, $56.
That's very good.
I can get behind that.
So we did, we have a tie for first.
Yeah.
Okay.
Here we go.
That was your winner.
It's so crazy.
It's beautiful.
This is distilled in Kentucky, uh, bottled in Chattanooga, J.W.
Kelly, but this is rumored to be new.
Yeah.
And we did a review on it.
Dang.
That's so, you're number one.
It's 40 bucks.
All right.
It's amazing.
So my number one was one of the best in this blind.
It is a rye as well.
If you like a little more of that rye flavor profile, you're going to like it
more if you like a little bit more of a bourbon rye, go with the Silver Springs.
Sweet rye.
Both of those are excellent.
This one will run you about 60 bucks.
40.
That's amazing.
All right.
What's our, what's our scores here?
Well, we had a tie for first, so we, we canceled out there.
Okay.
However, we had unanimous third and fourth.
So those third place points go to yours truly.
I thought Johnny Drum was going to be a sleeper, just kick your
ass, but it didn't work out that way.
No, it stayed asleep, unfortunately, but I do like this format.
I think this blind, uh, made it way more interesting to the hunt.
Come back.
Let's see who picked the better bottles.
We bought four quality whiskeys for, for $200 essentially.
So that's what it comes down to.
Okay.
So all this aside, uh, we want to know what you guys would buy with $100.
One great bottle, which there's plenty of, but why buy one when you can get two?
Or three.
Who knows?
Really?
Yeah.
Um, anyway, drop your comments or your bottles or your lineup, whatever you
want to under a hundred dollars down below in the comment section.
Yeah.
And if you enjoyed the hunt, hit the like and subscribe and let
us know we should do this again.
Begin a YouTube.
They have another suggestion for watching right there.
Right there.
Let's see what it picked for you until next time.
Friends, please enjoy your bourbon responsibly, stay curious and cheers.
I'm going to do this one.
Cheer friends.
Peace.
