Hello everyone welcome back to Teacher Su's Blossoming Classroom Today let's explore the black-and-white variations in the wood course as well as color changes in painting
The original colors of Moku are only black and white upon close inspection the grays in Moku are still composed of black-and-white relationships formed by lines and dots in various arrangements
Strictly speaking wood grain has no gray—black and white are the most fundamental colors of wood grain
To highlight the characteristics of woodblock printing the first step is to emphasize the rhythm of black and white variations The alternation of black and white creates gray tones and differing densities produce distinct textures
The contrast in color tone in the image changes from small to large and then back to small
As shown in the above diagram the gray tone formed by thin and sparse lines is distinctly different from the gray tone formed by thick and dense lines
This shift inspires us to employ various lines dots and color blocks to create diverse methods of gray
From the following series of images we can see that black and white exert the same visual effect as color does
In woodwork white has an expansive quality while black has a contracting effect
Likewise in color yellow appears expansive and blue gives a contracting sensation
This creates a different visual and perceptual impression between reality and illusion while grayness tends toward harmony and stability
The following series of images first draws squares of the same size on white paper in black then draws the same squares on black paper in white
In contrast the white square on a black background appears larger because black and white affect human vision differently
Converting an image into black and white is akin to the yin and yang principles in traditional Chinese philosophy
In wood-based compositions one must skillfully utilize the visual impact of black and white to achieve expressive goals
Beginners typically have a weak understanding of conversion which greatly hinders their ability to freely handle black-and-white photography
However the contemporary application of woodblock printing techniques in black and white has long surpassed traditional relief printing and stone rubbing
Below is an exercise for converting black and white
Exercise method
Therefore it cannot be simply handled using yin and yang
Each artwork should be unified and rich in detail
Let's now follow the teacher to explore the specific steps
First when you obtain a reference image of an orchid you can begin with a
simple sketch creating two or more studies based on the same composition
要求使用不同的黑白转换方法来创作画面
Then apply a gray tone to the background using lines
Let's take a
look together Use the tip of the stick to outline the details of the petals paying attention to the overlapping relationships
This painting was created by the teacher using computer software for easier demonstration
Alright students you can use black-and-white scratch paper for this activity
The main petals can be slightly enlarged and adjusted with some subjective artistic treatment
Always scrape in the direction of the material's grain for a clean polished finish
When carving small areas leave slight gaps between the petals—don't scrape too cleanly
The remaining black lines can exist as texture within the composition
When sanding the background leave a small margin with the large brush avoiding damage to the main structure
Finally tidy up the details by brushing away the black powder with a toothbrush and our scratchboard artwork is complete
Give it a try
yourself Alright that's all for today's class see you next time everyone
