Russia unearthed a thousand-year-old palace and the one buried inside was none other than a Chinese traitor a well-known traitor in our country yet Russia reveres him as a great hero The discovery of an artifact has finally cleared the name of this famous general of the Huaxia people who was wronged for over two thousand years Follow us and let Xiao Ji take you to uncover the secrets buried for a thousand years
On this day a tribe in Abakan Russia was building a farm when during normal construction workers suddenly noticed something unusual beneath the soil and out of curiosity they continued digging who could have guessed that this dig would uncover a palace the workers immediately reported it to the local authorities when the archaeological team arrived at the scene they were stunned by the sight before them experts found that this was not in the Russian architectural style after reviewing the data experts were surprised to discover that it was in the architectural style of the Western Han Dynasty in China and after identification they reached a conclusion
This palace site does not belong to the nomads but rather to the Han people Given the site's grand scale it is unlikely that ordinary people had the means to build it Russian experts speculate that the owner of this palace was most likely a high-ranking general during the Western Han Dynasty in China
According to historical records experts turned their attention to Ling a famous general of the Western Han Dynasty But why did a Han Chinese man die in Russia and why was such a large palace built To find out the reasons we must start by looking at Ling himself
Ling a figure who has always been controversial for over two thousand years was always accompanied by the title of traitor and national betrayer Perhaps some people are not familiar with Ling but we are all familiar with Li Guang the general who repelled the Xiongnu the national hero written about by Sima Qian His grandson was Ling How could Ling with such a heroic ancestor be called a traitor
In the past Ling marched with the army to attack the Xiongnu and the commander of the campaign against the Xiongnu was Li Guangli Ling was mainly responsible for the transportation of military supplies and provisions On the way he was surrounded by 80 000 Xiongnu cavalry After eight days and nights of fighting Ling killed more than 10 000 Xiongnu but in the end he was captured because he did not receive support from the main force and ran out of ammunition and food The news of Ling's defeat quickly reached Emperor Wu of Han who had originally hoped he would die in battle but he never expected Ling to have surrendered
When Sima Qian defended Ling he accidentally hit the wrong spot Sima Qian was later sentenced to castration by Emperor Wu of Han for defending Ling Later there were rumors that Ling had become a general in the Xiongnu and was training their troops Furious Emperor Wu took his anger out on Ling's family and Ling's entire family was executed Sima Qian was demoted from his position as a central government official to a commoner Several years after Emperor Zhao ascended the throne he sent envoys to the Xiongnu to bring Ling back but the hatred for killing his son and wife was something no one could forget
Ling lived among the Xiongnu for more than twenty years before dying of illness in a foreign land and as the excavation work continued the world saw how this foreign general lived
The roof of the palace like most Chinese architecture is a four-sided slope with thinner and shorter outer walls around the center of the building and tiles with inscriptions are also exposed at the base of these walls The roof of the room is a single-sided tile roof with its upper edge connected to the four walls of the central room
As shown in the restoration diagram this palace is a typical example of Chinese architecture and even the plaques on the palace are inscribed with Chinese characters
Russian archaeologists also discovered many artifacts related to the Central Plains region of the Western Han Dynasty such as green jade circular vase fragments and ring-shaped knives among which a copper-made beast-horn divine hand ring was also unearthed featuring a solemn and serious beast-horn face with three spiral-shaped decorations on its horns
Although Ling had settled in the Xiongnu the unearthed tiles still revealed his true inner world after his surrender
After the entire palace site was excavated Russian experts pieced together the tiles and discovered that they were also inscribed with characters specifically in the Han dynasty's cursive script
After arranging these characters through restoration techniques they finally formed the ten characters: "Heavenly Son Eternal Joy Everlasting Peace "
The so-called Weiyang Palace was the main imperial palace during the Western Han Dynasty representing the political center and national symbol while the Changle Palace was the palace where the Han Dynasty emperors resided
If these words appeared in China it wouldn't be surprising they are simply expressions of loyalty whereas Ling is completely different from them
Ling's parents and siblings passed away one after another and the heavy responsibility of reviving the family naturally fell on Ling's shoulders
So when Emperor Wu of Han ordered him to handle the logistics Ling still accepted the mission even though the emperor did not provide him with horses until the story of the five thousand infantry fighting against eighty thousand Xiongnu cavalry occurred
Ling worked so hard to serve his country but it only brought about the destruction of his family
If the palace found within Russia is indeed Ling's it is not difficult to see from the inscriptions on the tiles that Ling was a man of the Xiongnu but with a heart for the Han
In the face of such circumstances Ling still built the architecture of his hometown and left these eight characters which made people unable not to admire him
Ling spent his later years in the Xiongnu but this did not stop his longing for his hometown Perhaps he also hoped that the Han dynasty would soon conquer the Xiongnu allowing him to naturally return to his homeland
Japanese archaeologists believe that the Russian palace ruins are the result of Ling's efforts and his Xiongnu wife in his later years but many people hold different opinions
Chinese scholar Guo Moruo had a different view they believed that items such as the wadan and copper bracelets should have been transmitted from China to the Xiongnu
The Han dynasty princess Xia Jia may have brought it over to protect the border from the Xiongnu's incursions as it was beyond their capability to produce it themselves
However this argument clearly does not hold up Chinese scholar Zhou Liankuan also has a new perspective on this matter
He rejected the first two theories about the palace and even believed that this was not the site of Ling's palace
This palace was most likely where the daughter of Wang Zhaojun and her son-in-law lived as they were the most likely to have gained support from the remnants of the Xiongnu period
This is how they were able to build this Han stone palace so far to the north
From the existing clues we can't definitely determine the true owner of the palace but it's undeniable that this is certainly Chinese architecture
How Ling lived among the Xiongnu who had been misunderstood for a thousand years Although Sima Qian was punished because of Ling
But he had no complaints when describing Ling instead portraying her as a tragic hero
If you look through historical records you'll find that Ling may not be the traitor people claim him to be
He has been with Li Guangli since his first day as a soldier but Li Guangli's ability as a commander is indeed adequate
In a campaign against the Xiongnu she killed more than 10 000 Xiongnu warriors but lost the lives of 20 000 soldiers
Although the battle was a victory it was not honorable and it was not independent Li Guangli's other achievements were mostly poor
Even so Li Guangli would not be punished simply because her sister was the beloved Li Lady of Emperor Wu of Han
Emperor Wu of Han not only did not blame Li Guangli but also shifted all the blame onto Ling
So whose fault was Ling's defeat Eight days of fighting with five thousand troops against eighty thousand cavalry
How many in history could match him It is said that this defeat was caused by a traitor in the army
Leaked the supply route of Ling to the Xiongnu and also sold the intelligence that Ling had no reinforcements to the Xiongnu
Ling had no choice but to surrender when she was in a desperate situation Whether she wanted to
protect the remaining soldiers or she didn't want to die on the battlefield I think Ling's actions were reasonable
She deserves to be called a hero just for holding off 80 000 Xiongnu cavalry with 5 000 infantry for eight days and nights
What do you think about Lingshi a traitor or a hero Welcome to comment and exchange views Click follow to stay tuned See you next time
