February 02, 2026 | Mount Greylock, MA • The Thunderbolt is considered an East Coast backcountry classic, a ski trail cut during the great depression, with history of almost 100 years. I!ve been looking at it for many years, but it never seemed to have enough snow for good skiing. This year delivered.

Hey guys, today we are in Massachusetts and we're gonna ski a bit of New England history here
They call it
East Coast backcountry classic
But from everything I saw on the internet, it looked more like a
Ski area without the lift. It seemed the ski trail is pretty wide
and
The trail was built about a hundred years ago in
1930s some of the early races people didn't have helmets. They you know, they had wooden skis
I don't know if it had even metal edges. It was pretty much free healing. No plastic and
And I don't know if they could groom it
They probably just sidestepped the mountain to be able to ski it and yet they were able to ski it down under three minutes or so
And then before the US entered the Second World War
Actually Hitler sent his ski team over here for one of the races and everybody was
shocked because those guys were just
Shoesink the whole thing down in like two and a half minutes. I'm looking at it. I am NOT gonna do that
I'm not gonna do what the German boys did. It's a beautiful day. It's pretty cold when I was driving up here. It was minus nine
So I hope that the Sun will help a little bit to fix the the freeze especially at the top
So we just finished first mile
ish
And we have two more miles to go
If you guys plan on coming over I
Recommend bring a map because there is a lot of trails that just crisscross. I had a few minor detours
It seems that most of the uphill is pretty wide and
obvious
It's sometimes steep, but it's still pretty wide
But I followed some other people's skin tracks
It didn't feel like trail at all, it's beautiful though. I hope the skiing is good
So here is where we meet the ski trail again
It doesn't look bad at all still have to get to the top
Okay, we're by the shelter
So we're at the top. It's super cold, super windy, my fingers are about to fall off
I'm gonna get out of here
They said there was gonna be some beautiful views, but I'm not sure I'm into it today
Let's get out of here, it's too cold
That's how much snow we got here
This is Thunderbolt, I'm totally not choosing this thing
Hey guys
It's
Fast a
Beautiful day. I just feel like if I send it too fast, I'm not gonna really enjoy it, but it wants to go
It just wants to go
Nice they have a very steep section with some rocks sticking out
When I was driving in I ran into a ranger or something
And he was telling me that the slope at some point is over 30 degrees
I didn't quite believe him, but I see it now
There's a lot of stuff sticking out
Needles I
Well, I must say that it looked a little bit better on the way up
Oh
Did you get me
Can I get it from here
Yeah
So far away
I guess I'm supposed to go down here
Really
Are you sure?
This is probably
Now this cannot be this
Oh, man, that was so good I
Don't have the energy to go up again
But it was so good. I honestly have no idea if I took the right trail
I'll have to analyze the footage. I'm sure the top was okay all the way till the kiosk and
I believe I was still on the right one down from the kiosk from where the uphill trail crosses
the downhill
But then it seemed to be pretty skinny
There were two uphills that it's hard to believe that like how much speed would you need to actually get over it?
And then the name turned into roost
