The purpose of this was to deter bandits and robbers and to display the emperor's authority, so that the Wusun Kingdom would understand how much importance the emperor placed on the marriage-alliance princess, and would not dare fail to show Princess Jieyou proper respect.

The emperor ordered that only the finest equipment be used and the most capable people be selected, to assemble a powerful procession for the marriage alliance:

The carriages and palanquins were lavishly decorated, the horses draped in costly, colorful silk. The guard officers wore standard-issue ceremonial armor, and the attendants — masters of ceremony, chief eunuchs (confidential officials within the palace), maidservants, carriage drivers, and other servants — were all dressed in uniforms mandated by the palace.

First Meeting with Weng Gui

In the first year of the Tianhan era of Emperor Wu of Han (100 BCE), a brand-new and magnificent procession set out from the capital, Chang'an, to escort Princess Jieyou on her journey for the marriage alliance.

The moment they passed through the city gates, Liu Jieyou insisted on riding her own horse, simply because the swaying of the carriage made her too dizzy to bear. She even changed out of her bright red wedding gown into a light riding outfit.
