The Freytag: “Imagine there's a war and nobody goes!”

Everyone knows this phrase. But none of my generation knows what war actually means. We have - or should I say, had? - the great good fortune of only being able to comprehend war through the stories of our grandparents and to picture it in our minds. Even though I had some fun shooting at targets during my basic military service in the German army - they were just cardboard figures - I would never want to imagine having to aim a gun at another person. Nor could I imagine being at the controls of a drone - away from the front line - deciding between life and death at the touch of a button.

There may be those who love war. But every normal person just wants to live in peace with their family, seek their happiness, realize themselves and accept the gift of life. War, on the other hand, means death - the complete antithesis of life. Strangely enough, it is often those who have no idea what war actually means who loudly toot the war horn. Especially the privileged, who never have to go to the front themselves, sit at their computers with bloodshot eyes - at least that's how I imagine it - and write about the war. Their keyboards are glowing and the warmongering propaganda seems to flow unstoppably. Could it be that a particularly large number of journalists in Germany are outdoing each other in making war palatable?

Of course, no one writes this openly; it is much more subtle. The enemy is demonized, so that in the end there is only one solution: total war against these demons. All previous history, everything human, is ignored. The fact that there are always alternatives for everything in the world is also completely negated. There is only one way: war. It started with helmets; the resistance was still strong. “They're just helmets,” they said. But anyone with sense and understanding - and there aren't too many of them left in this oh-so-intelligent and elitist world of media and politics - knows: it's a spiral. It starts with helmets. How does it end? That remains to be seen. But at the moment the Taurus is leaping through the media landscape, and what this bull may bring us when it is “finally” delivered, as many warmongers say, remains to be seen.

True to the old motto of the law of reciprocal action: actio = reactio, it should be clear to everyone, even the laziest of thinkers, that this third Newtonian law is also valid in social life. What might all those politicians who so vehemently want to see the Taurus delivered to Ukraine be thinking? I think very little. There doesn't seem to be much in these think tanks, apart from a lack of love for their fellow human beings. Because anyone who can think knows that the reactio could have serious consequences for Europe.

Imagine there is a war and nobody goes - then the war comes to you! I wish this sentence came from Brecht; then it would be easier. But even with this quote, it's not as simple as the writer would have liked. Everything is complex - even here. Taurus or not; Brecht or not; thinking or not thinking; enemy or friend; demon or saint ... - What will I vote for next year, when new elections are allowed after the traffic light explosion? The pro-taurants? This question is also complex. There are only simple solutions at school.

Imagine there's a war and nobody goes! I would wish for it. Incidentally, I recently asked an AI what would happen if nobody voted in the next general election. The answer was very interesting. But such a case will probably never occur in the real world - just like the case where no one goes in the event of war. There are so many things that will probably never happen. But which would be nice if they did exist. The vernacular calls them utopias.

But every utopia begins as something unimaginable. And every attempt to imagine a utopia brings it a little closer to the realm of possibility. A utopia could be the vision of a peaceful and just world. I'd like to think about this idea. Perhaps I am not alone in this. What's so bad about wishing for peace?

Here were many more utopians than we might think. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 is the result of the thinking of many utopians. Even though the UDHR does not contain an article that explicitly mentions the word “peace” in the sense of the absence of war, there are articles that implicitly aim for peace and protection from violence:

Article 1: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should treat one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” This article promotes the principle of fraternity, which is the basis for peaceful coexistence.

Article 3: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” Protection from violence and threats, which are often a prerequisite for peace.

Article 28: “Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.” Implies the need for a peaceful international order in order to guarantee human rights.

The concept of peace is central to the Charter of the United Nations (1945), whose preamble begins with the words: “We, the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save future generations from the scourge of war [...]”

To this day, peace has always been, sometimes more, sometimes less, a utopia. But if we do not try to fill this utopia with life, there will soon be no life left. Is that what we want? Imagine there is a war and nobody goes! But go to the next election and show the taurants that WE - the PEOPLE - still believe in the utopia of peace: in peace among the peoples of Europe, in peace in the world.

The Charter of the United Nations obliges politicians to remain true to their promise - the promise to act for the good of the people.

“We, the peoples of the United Nations - determined to save future generations from the scourge of war [...]”

Sapere aude!
