One day, Yama King, the supreme ruler of the Underworld, summoned all the Death Gods who guided souls in the human world and asked them to share their experiences and hardships.
Most of the Death Gods agreed that carrying the memories of their previous lives while guiding human souls was unbearably painful. As solitary deities, they were forbidden to marry or have children. When they encountered the ones they had once loved, they could do nothing. They could neither pursue love nor interfere with the marriages of ordinary people, and could only watch those they had once loved build families with someone else.
Unable to bear the pain any longer, the Death Gods pleaded with Yama King to erase their memories.
Yama King finally agreed. He ordered that every soul guide drink the Water of the River of Forgetfulness. Once they drank it, all memories of their previous lives would disappear, allowing them to carry out their duties without emotional attachments.
When it was Ajiu's turn, however, he refused.
The one serving the Water of Forgetfulness was a beautiful goddess, a figure whose role was similar to Meng Po in the Central Plains. She smiled at Ajiu. "Are you certain you can endure the burden of your memories? You only have one chance. If you refuse now, there won't be another."
