As the world changed, humanity's divine nature was gradually consumed by desire, and the era in which gods and humans coexisted came to an end. The gods had not disappeared—they simply withdrew from the world, some even disguising themselves as beggars, hoping that one day humanity would awaken once more and no longer allow desire to cloud their hearts and minds.
People's fear and avoidance of the Death Gods eventually turned into anger and hatred. Whenever they saw a Death God, they attacked with whatever objects they could find. At that very moment, Ajiu was being struck by stones, his head bloodied by an enraged crowd. One of their relatives had been swept away by a swift river and drowned while fishing. When Ajiu arrived to guide the man's soul to the Underworld, the family mistakenly believed he was the one who had caused the death and furiously pelted him with stones.
Suddenly, an elderly monk came running toward them. Thinking another person had come to seek revenge, Ajiu closed his eyes in despair. Then he felt someone throw their arms around him. Opening his eyes, he was stunned to see that it was the old monk, shielding him from the flying stones with his own body.
"My lord, you know that I am not human. Wounds from stones heal on their own. But you possess a mortal body—why endure such suffering for my sake?" Ajiu frowned as he applied medicine to the monk's injuries.
"Not at all," the old monk replied gently. "This is a debt from my previous life that I must repay in this one. Do you still remember Caihong?"
The moment he heard that name, Ajiu froze in shock.
