My inference:

Lin Beichuan knew far too much about Yu’s situation (likely including the black industry chains behind Yu), and therefore could not simply abandon the case. As Yu’s case and the related black industry chains drew enormous public attention, this posed a serious threat to Xi Jinping’s side. People connected to Xi Yuanping harmed Lin Beichuan and injected him with toxins in order to silence him—but due to Lin Beichuan’s background, they could not directly eliminate him.
