Democrats are split on the future of their party as a swell of candidates linked to democratic socialist policies have seen a series of primary victories in blue seats and a handful of key swing races.

A split between two core factions of Democrats—progressives, left-wing populists, and democratic socialists on one side; and centrists, moderates, and establishmentarians on the other—has simmered just beneath the surface of Democratic Party politics since 2016.

President Donald Trump announced on Aug. 18 that he would delay an additional 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods following last-minute talks between the two countries. The tariffs were originally set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Aug. 19.

Trump announced on Truth Social that the two countries have reached a deal.

“I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” he wrote.
