Labour NEC Gemma Bolton says the Party needs its "best players on the pitch" - and "Andy Burnham is probably best place to be winning that election".

"It seems like, hopefully, Andy won't be blocked again and he'll have the opportunity to make his case the the voters in Makerfield," she added.

Andy Burnham confirmed he will request permission from Labour's National Executive Committee to stand in the Makerfield by-election.
