ExclusiveAbigail May Alcott Nieriker: The Real Amy from Little Women
Most readers know Little Women and the beloved March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. But few know the remarkable real woman who inspired Amy.
In this episode of American Legends, Tiffany Brannan explores the life of Abigail May Alcott Nieriker, the youngest sister of Louisa May Alcott and the real-life inspiration behind Amy March in Little Women.
Born in 1840 into the famous Alcott family, May grew up surrounded by some of the greatest thinkers of 19th-century America. Her parents were part of the Transcendentalist movement, and family friends included literary giants such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
While her sister Louisa became one of America’s most famous novelists, May pursued a different artistic path — painting and illustration. She created the original illustrations for the first edition of Little Women and later studied art in London, Paris, and Rome, where she developed a reputation as a talented watercolor painter and copyist of the great master J.M.W. Turner.
May also wrote the practical travel guide “Studying Art Abroad and How to Do It Cheaply” (1879), helping young American women pursue artistic education in Europe.
Her life took an unexpected romantic turn when she married Swiss musician Ernst Nieriker at the age of 37. The marriage was brief but happy. Sadly, May died only weeks after the birth of her daughter.
Although she never reached the same fame as her sister Louisa, Abigail May Alcott helped open doors for women artists in the 19th century, demonstrating that American women could pursue serious artistic careers both at home and abroad.
