Exclusive“Three Secrets” (1951): First Woman’s Weepie
There’s nothing like a tragedy to bring people together, and many films create a fascinating plot by showing how one traumatic event can cause very different individuals’ paths to cross. One such film is “Three Secrets,” a 1951 drama about three women from very different backgrounds who are brought together by the fact that each gave a son up for adoption on the same day five years ago. When the story hits the news that a five-year-old boy has been stranded on a mountainous cliff in a plane crash which killed his adoptive parents, the three women gather at the base of the mountain to await his rescue. These three women are a sensitive housewife (Jeanne Crain), a tough newspaperwoman (Patricial Neal), and an alcoholic convict (Ruth Roman). As the three women bond over their different but similarly ill-fated motherhoods, each wonders whether she might have a second chance to raise her son as her own.
