The 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson was an early frontier president who shaped the Democratic Party. His stubborn determination first as a heroic war commander and then as a political figure earned him the nickname “Jackass,” which he embraced in future campaigning, leading the animal to later become the symbol of the Democratic Party. As the last two-term president until Abraham Lincoln, Jackson lowered the national debt, replaced the Second Bank of the United States with smaller local institutions, fought his own vice-president to keep South Carolina from seceding, and laid the groundwork for a political party which would be known as “Jacksonian Democrats.”
