10th president John Tyler was the first man to take the office by default, stepping up from the position of Vice President when his running mate, William Henry Harrison, died after a month in office. Since the Constitution provided no procedure for how to fill the presidential seat if it were left empty, Tyler set the precedent for all future presidential deaths by assuming the role of president immediately, although he faced constant criticism and disrespect from both parties throughout his term. His first wife died during his presidency, and he remarried while still in office, making him the only president to have two wives in the White House; he also holds the record as the president who fathered the most children, sixteen.
