Westerns are usually about cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs who sling bullets at each other at high noon. However, did you know that there is a classic Western where a lawyer turned newspaperman shoots patriotic words and dazzling high notes at a corrupt financier? “Let Freedom Ring” from 1939 is a musical Western from the heyday of MGM, starring operatic baritone Nelson Eddy. When a selfish developer brings the railroad into an honest Western town, he starts threatening, bribing, and burning out citizens who own the land and positions he wants. It’s up to Steve Logan, a lawyer just returned from Harvard, to defend his friends and family against the invaders without letting anyone know that he is on their side. His leading lady is played by Virginia Bruce, a forgotten actress with a beautiful voice and dramatic acting skills. The impressive supporting cast includes Lionel Barrymore, Edward Arnold, Victor McLaglen, H. B. Warner, and Charles Butterworth. If Frank Capra made a musical Western, it couldn’t be any more inspiring and patriotic than this movie!
