Exclusive“Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid” (1948): First Magical Movie
Movies about magical or mythical creatures are very popular today, but there are very few from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Some of the rare exceptions feature a whimsical creature which has appeared in folk legends around the world since antiquity, the mermaid. One American movie about mermaids is “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid” from 1948. Starring sophisticated actor William Powell as Mr. Peabody and youthful beauty Ann Blyth as the mermaid, it starts as a very realistic 1940s romantic comedy before taking a very whimsical twist. This film is a reaction to the mermaid fascination which was sparked by the opening of Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs to the public in 1947. As the self-dubbed “City of Mermaids,” this natural water feature became the home of real-life mermaids, women who performed underwater shows, oftentimes in mermaid tails. These Weeki Wachee Springs was used to film this amazing movie, and two of the mermaids worked as swimming stunt doubles for the actresses. Today, this remains an amazing example of using real ingenuity to make an underwater world come to life onscreen.
