Exclusive“Pat and Mike” (1952): First Sports Film
Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made nine movies together, playing many different roles during their long and successful partnership. Rival journalists, married scientists, battling lawyers, and… a lady athlete and her manager? Believe it or not, their seventh film pairing, “Pat and Mike” from 1952, was an athletic movie which is sure to entertain any sports fan! Inspired by Hepburn’s real-life athleticism, this movie features impressive footage of the actress golfing and playing tennis alongside actual sports pros of the day. The story is a charming one which was written for the screen partners and is said to mirror their real personalities and relationship more than any other. Hepburn plays Pat, a widow who teaches physical education at a girls’ college. Tracy plays Mike, a shady promoter who unsuccessfully tries to convince her to throw a golf match. Eager to get away from her overbearing fiancé, Pat takes Mike up on his offer to be her manager. As he inspires her to have confidence in herself, she teaches him about honesty, integrity, and affection. This one’s a winner!
