🌲 Strasbourg Cathedral is one of the most significant religious buildings in European architectural history and among the largest sandstone structures in the world. Combining Romanesque and Gothic styles, its construction began in 1176 and took over 250 years to complete, finally finishing in 1439. From 1647 to 1874, its northern tower, standing 142 meters tall, earned it the title of the tallest building in the world. After Strasbourg was reclaimed by Louis XIV in 1681, a re-Catholicization movement followed.

During the French Revolution (1789–1799), many religious symbols were destroyed, including saintly statues, and there were even plans to dismantle the northern tower as a symbol of equality. The church sustained damage during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 due to its strategic location but was later restored. Similarly, World War II bombings in 1944 damaged parts of the cathedral and its decorations, which were subsequently repaired. Many original artworks were moved to the Frauenhaus Museum for preservation, and replicas replaced them during the 19th century to restore the cathedral’s original look.

One of Strasbourg Cathedral's unique features is its pink Vosges sandstone, which changes color depending on light conditions. The hues shift from soft pink to deep red or even golden yellow, creating a stunning spectacle under varying weather and sunlight.
