A River's Gifts

For millennia, the Elwha river flowed north to the sea, teeming with salmon that nourished bears, otters, and eagles. The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, known as the Strong People in the Pacific Northwest, cherished the river's bounty. This changed in the 1790s when newcomers, unaware of the river's value, constructed dams, leading to severe environmental damage. Sibert honoree Patricia Newman and award-winning illustrator Natasha Donovan collaborate to narrate the Elwha's story, detailing how the Strong People successfully fought to restore the river and their lifestyle.
