Hollywood — Dune 3 Cast Reveals Major Departures From the Books but Defends Denis Villeneuve’s Vision
The cast of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune 3” has acknowledged that the upcoming instalment will take creative liberties with Frank Herbert’s literary franchise, despite drawing heavily from the author’s 1969 sequel novel, “Dune Messiah.”
Zendaya explained that the film remains closely connected to the original material while introducing several changes. Newcomer Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, suggested that audiences should not be overly critical of the differences.
“There’s a lot in this film that is very true to the source material, and there are departures,” Zendaya said.
Pattinson responded: “You got to be kind of crazy if you’re going to be picking fault with this one [over the changes to the books].”
Pattinson, who joins the franchise as Scytale, also described the screenplay as particularly complex, adding that the finished film differed considerably from what he initially expected.
“The script was really cool, but it was quite complicated,” he said. “And watching the film, it’s not about what I thought it was going to be about at all. It reads as much more of a grand political, moral fable, and the movie is so much more emotional. A lot of it is about parenting, and I just thought it was so moving.”
Timothée Chalamet, another central figure in the franchise, was also asked whether he was happy with Villeneuve’s decision on how to conclude the film trilogy. He expressed complete satisfaction with the director’s approach.
“Absolutely. It didn’t feel like the bar dropped at all, Denis just changed the location of the bar. This movie is its own thing,” Chalamet said.
“Dune 3” is scheduled to arrive in theatres toward the end of an already successful year for the box office. Its opening weekend will coincide with “Avengers: Doomsday,” with the two releases widely expected to generate the biggest single weekend in box office history.
Florence Pugh, who returns as Irulan, also highlighted the franchise’s contribution to restoring cinema attendance following the pandemic and multiple Hollywood strikes. She credited the films with helping bring audiences back to theatres.
The first “Dune” film debuted simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max, ultimately collecting $410 million worldwide. That performance was particularly significant in 2021, when the Hollywood industry was still dealing with disruptions caused by COVID.
The 2024 sequel, which received an exclusive theatrical release, performed even better, generating $714 million worldwide.
Reflecting on the success of the second instalment, Pugh said: “What an event the second one was. It was just so lovely to be a part of something that we know is our generational kind of ‘Star Wars.’”
Zendaya also emphasised the importance of theatrical releases and the franchise’s role in keeping the cinema experience alive.
“Any opportunity that we have that we can hopefully contribute to the moviegoing experience and keep that alive, because it’s so much a part of my life, my childhood, so many people’s lives — it’s the reason we do it,” she said.
“Dune 3” is scheduled to open in theatres on Dec. 18, with Warner Bros. and Legendary handling the release.
