INDIA — Reliance Jio’s $3.2 Billion IPO Attracts $77 Billion in Bids, Strengthening Ambani’s Business Empire

Reliance Jio Platforms’ planned stock-market debut has emerged as a major milestone for Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, drawing extraordinary investor demand and placing greater attention on the company’s future growth potential.

The $3.2 billion initial public offering received $77 billion in bids, exceeding the shares available by more than 22 times, according to Reuters reporting. The offering marks the first IPO from Ambani’s business group in 20 years and has become the most heavily subscribed public offering in Indian history.

Institutional investors demonstrated particularly strong demand, submitting bids for more than 70 times the shares reserved for them. Among the prominent investors participating in the offering were Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BlackRock and Fidelity.

Jio is scheduled to begin trading on October 28. The overwhelming demand has raised expectations for a strong market debut, though the company’s actual share-price performance after listing remains uncertain.

Trading in the informal grey market suggested a potential listing gain of 22% against the offering price of 1,119 rupees ($11.76) per share. However, these unofficial market signals do not guarantee the price at which the stock will ultimately trade.

Investors are weighing Jio’s established telecommunications business against its prospects for expansion into other technology segments. Broadband, enterprise technology, cloud computing and artificial intelligence are among the areas expected to offer opportunities for future growth.

Brokerage Motilal Oswal highlighted the company’s combination of market leadership, healthy earnings growth and expansion opportunities in broadband, enterprise technology and AI. In a report dated October 19, the brokerage recommended subscribing to the IPO, citing the potential for both listing gains and longer-term investment returns.

However, Jio’s valuation has raised questions about how much further its shares could climb. Geojit Investments said in an October 21 report that the company was trading at a premium to its industry peers, with a valuation of 15 times enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.

The elevated valuation could constrain near-term share-price gains. Nevertheless, the brokerage pointed to the potential monetization of newer operations, particularly cloud and AI services, as a source of earnings growth over the medium to long term.

The public offering has also drawn attention to Akash Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s son, who led discussions surrounding the IPO. People familiar with the matter told Reuters that Akash has taken a more active role in strategic decision-making and conversations with investors.

Outside the IPO, Reliance has been involved in a prominent dispute over Starlink’s proposed entry into India, involving SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk.

During a visit to Reliance Industries’ refining complex in Jamnagar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the company to increase its processing of Venezuelan crude oil. Discussions also covered the possibility of future oil production in Venezuela, with Rubio describing India as a refining “superpower”.

Musk, meanwhile, accused the Indian government and Ambani of delaying Starlink’s entry into the Indian market. The government rejected claims that it was giving preferential treatment to Reliance, stating that Starlink and satellite ventures backed by Jio and Bharti Airtel were at broadly similar stages of the approval process.

Reliance said it welcomed Starlink’s entry and had never been afraid of competition. The company also noted that Jio’s own satellite service was still awaiting regulatory clearance.

With the IPO, Jio has become a focal point for investors looking at India’s technology sector. Its market debut will offer an important indication of how investors value its established telecommunications operations alongside its ambitions in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
