Los Angeles — “Desert Chant,” the first single from Dune: Part Three, is now available, opening with Timothée Chalamet humming before building into a powerful war chant. Composer Hans Zimmer, who created the scores for the franchise’s previous installments, wrote the track.

Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides in the third film, which picks up the story following his rise to power at the end of Dune: Part Two. Drawing inspiration from Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, the latest installment unfolds 17 years after the previous film’s events and examines the repercussions of Paul’s rule as emperor. The story takes a notably darker direction as Paul’s ability to envision the future, once a defining gift, becomes increasingly clouded after he takes control of the galaxy.

For Zimmer, revisiting Arrakis also meant reconnecting with the novel that captivated his imagination as a teenager. That same book would eventually become a shared creative influence for the composer and director Denis Villeneuve.

“When two teenagers are deeply moved by the same novel that lets their imagination run wild, so wild that the mysticism and philosophy that captured their souls never lets them go, they will inevitably meet and become creative brothers,” Zimmer says.

He also reflects on how working on Dune brought him back to a period of youthful creativity.

“For me, the beauty of working on ‘Dune’ was that it would take me back into a time of being full of youthful imagination, where everything was true and the impossible was possible. I truly believe that Denis and I never stopped dreaming those dreams the book lit like fire in us teenagers, but now we had learned the craft and knowledge, having done a few films, to turn our mental images into reality.”

Several familiar faces will return for the new installment, including Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Pugh, whose portrayal of Princess Irulan receives a larger role in the film. Anya Taylor-Joy also returns as Alia Atreides, who becomes a devoted follower of her brother.

The cast will also feature new additions, including Pattinson and Isaach de Bankolé, who plays Paul’s former Fedaykin death commando.

Dune: Part Three is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18.
