“Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer revealed in an interview published Monday that she recently underwent a genital reconstructive procedure to align with her identity.

“I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” she told Elle magazine.

Schafer said in a 2016 interview with a North Carolina public radio station that she came out to her parents as a gay boy in the seventh grade.

The 27-year-old New Jersey native said a medical transition felt necessary after she’d tried “to make that previous body work.”

Schafer said she thought there was something cool about living in her former body, but that sentiment changed. She spent the start of the year recovering from surgery while friends and family came to visit. Schafer said was limited to walking no more than 150 steps per day while recuperating.

She recently wrapped the HBO series “Euphoria,” in which she had played Jules Vaughn since 2019, who like Schafer is transgender. Schafer will soon be seen in the Prime Video series “Blade Runner 2099” when it streams in November. She starred alongside Anne Hathaway in the drama “Mother Mary,” which hit theaters in April.

Schafer told Elle that growing up the child of two pastors gave her childhood structure, though she isn’t religious now.

She confessed to being “really angry at the world and at the restrictions” she felt growing up in a faith-based environment in North Carolina. Now she credits that upbringing for inspiring her to put ego aside and use creativity to serve a bigger purpose.

“I can have really beautiful conversations with my parents about spirituality now,” she said.
