Los Angeles — Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Face Off in Retro Game Shows for ‘Expectations’ Remix Video
Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan take part in a series of vintage-inspired game shows in the music video for the “Expectations” remix, which also features musician David Byrne and producer Dan Nigro.
Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the video features Rodrigo and Roan, marking the latter’s first-ever feature, on sets modeled after popular television programs “Family Feud” and “Hollywood Squares.” Byrne plays Johnny Johnson, the host of “Big Expectations,” where he asks three versions of Rodrigo, each wearing a different outfit, “a little bit how you got here.”
The video then moves between the various game show sets before introducing a new verse from Roan. She appears on “Sister Squabble” to face off against Rodrigo in a competition inspired by “Family Feud.”
“I took her to a concert front row thought it’d be fun,” Roan sings. “Her hand moving up my skirt, no piercing on her tongue / She said she’s call me later, that was three weeks ago / Classic L.A. behavior, she could’ve just said no.”
Nigro makes an appearance toward the end of the video, holding an oversized brick-style mobile phone reminiscent of the 1990s. His cameo reflects his role in the song’s creation, having produced “Expectations” alongside his work on Roan and Rodrigo’s albums. He also produced the track’s parent album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”
Rodrigo and Roan share a longstanding professional connection beyond their collaboration with Nigro. Roan previously served as the opening act on both Rodrigo’s “Sour” and “Guts” tours.
More recently, Roan performed at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Festival in late August. The event featured an all-female lineup that included Doechii, Rachel Chinouriri, Garbage, the Breeders and other artists.
