WASHINGTON, DC – Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on Thursday as tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea continue to rise.
According to a State Department press release, Rubio expressed support for de-escalation by all sides and said dialogue and engagement under the 2018 Ethiopia-Eritrea peace framework remain the only sustainable solution to internal and external tensions.
Rubio also stressed that countries across the Horn of Africa must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their neighbors and avoid cross-border incursions.
The Secretary warned that the region cannot tolerate another conflict and urged all sides to pursue diplomatic engagement.
