Los Angeles — Madonna celebrated her eldest daughter Lourdes Leon’s 30th birthday on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with an emotional social media tribute featuring throwback photos and videos chronicling her life from childhood to adulthood.
The pop icon, 68, shared a series of memories on Instagram to mark the milestone, including pictures from Lourdes’ early years, teenage life and adulthood, as well as videos of her singing. In the accompanying caption, Madonna reflected on becoming a mother, recalling the circumstances surrounding Lourdes’ birth and describing the special connection they share.
“Happy Birthday My Lolita!” Madonna wrote at the beginning of her message.
“You came to me in a Dream. A fever dream. A Dream called Life. If I tried to write it all down, I would cry a river of tears,” she continued.
Madonna also recounted the complications that arose during labor, explaining that an emergency C-section became necessary after 18 hours of labor and concerns about her daughter’s heartbeat.
“Your chin was tilted up in my birth canal, you were looking for the stars you were stuck. After 18 hours of labor and your heartbeat slowing down, an emergency C-section was the only option,” she wrote.
The singer recalled the intense attention surrounding the birth, noting that helicopters and news crews gathered above the hospital in East LA.
“Did I mention the helicopters and news crews swirling above our heads on the top floor of the hospital in East LA?,” she added. “[Your] birth was dramatic. Like our lives.”
Madonna welcomed Lourdes with her then-boyfriend, fitness trainer Carlos Leon, on Oct. 14, 1996, in Los Angeles.
In her birthday message, Madonna described their relationship as “Biblical.” She explained that whenever she asks God to clarify the connection, “He tells me- Look in the mirror!”
“We are Two side sides of the same coin. If what we risk reveals what we value then I would risk it all on you,” she wrote.
Madonna concluded her tribute with several heartfelt messages encouraging Lourdes to remain connected to her identity and roots.
“Never forget who you are- Little Star, shining brighter than all the stars in the sky,” she wrote. “Never forget how to Dream Butterfly. Never forget where you come from. From Love. ♥️”
The reference to “Little Star” has a particular significance for the pair. Madonna wrote the song for Lourdes and included it on her 1998 album Ray of Light.
Lourdes has since developed her own career in fashion and music. As a model, she has worked with brands including Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Swarovski and Mugler. She has also appeared in Vogue and Vanity Fair.
Her music career began with the release of her debut single, “Lock&Key,” in August 2022.
Growing up as the daughter of one of the world’s most recognizable pop stars has not prevented Lourdes from speaking openly about her relationship with Madonna and the difficulties of establishing her own identity.
In a 2021 interview with Interview magazine, Lourdes discussed how her understanding of her mother’s influence changed as she grew older.
“I didn’t fully comprehend that until I realized the importance of empowerment and what it means to be a woman,” she said. “She’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever seen. I didn’t inherit that, unfortunately. I inherited her control issues, but not her work ethic!”
More recently, the mother and daughter have explored their relationship through a musical collaboration.
In June 2026, Madonna revealed in a cover story for Interview magazine that Lourdes had approached her about writing a song together as a way to repair their relationship.
“She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship,” Madonna said.
The collaboration appeared on Madonna’s album Confession II, released in July 2026. The song, titled “The Test,” features both women sharing their perspectives on their relationship and the effects of growing up in the public eye.
Beyond Lourdes, Madonna is also the mother of Rocco Ritchie, whom she shares with filmmaker Guy Ritchie, along with David Banda, Mercy James and twins Stella and Estere.
