Scarlett Johansson takes on the role of a detective confronting a threat beyond the earthly realm in The Exorcist: Martyrs, a new entry in the popular horror franchise directed and written by Mike Flanagan.
Following her appearance as Linda Pearl in Paper Tiger, alongside Adam Driver and Miles Teller, Johansson joins the latest installment under the direction of Flanagan, whose previous work includes The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass and Carrie.
Johansson portrays Julie Miller, a New York detective whose past returns to haunt her when a new series of killings draws her into a disturbing investigation.
Thirteen years earlier, Miller brought an end to the reign of terror of Father Sunday, a satanic serial killer. The case made her a hero, and she believed she had put the nightmare behind her. However, a new killer writes her name in the blood of an altar boy across the walls of a crypt, pulling her back into the darkness and forcing her to reopen an investigation she thought was buried, according to the film’s synopsis.
As the investigation progresses, Miller begins uncovering unsettling links among the cases of several killers, including H.H. Holmes and the Zodiac Killer.
She receives assistance from Father William, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday’s final confession. The investigation also brings her together with Gina Restrepo, a rookie detective portrayed by Sasha Calle.
The official trailer shows Miller pursuing the case as she encounters an evil presence that threatens not only her own life but also the lives of those closest to her.
The cast also features Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Scoot McNairy, Gil Bellows, Laurence Fishburne and John Leguizamo, who portrays Father Sunday.
David Robinson, Jason Blum and Flanagan are producing the film, which Flanagan developed from a story based on characters created by William Peter Blatty. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers.
The Exorcist: Martyrs is scheduled to open in theaters on March 11, 2027.
